"THE INCIDENT"
IKF/ISCF
President
Steve Fossum has been waiting over 7 months for some kind of response
from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC)
about what many have entitled, "The Incident" that occurred at
an IKF Sanctioned Kickboxing event back in
July of 2009. Keeping his silence, he has simply waited for some kind of action
by the CSAC, yet, there has been none. The
factual story of "The Incident" has never been published,
until today. Better yet, there is a video tape of "The Incident"
so rest assured, you ARE reading a FACTUAL account of all that has
transpired.

"Fight Night At The Fox II"
July 11th, 2009, Redwood City,
California, USA
Fossum/IKF
Vs Officials Of The California State Commission
Incident
Q: Was IKF/ISCF President Steve Fossum really kicked
out of the event for being drunk and belligerent as a ring official, as
CAMO (California
Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Organization) Chief Jeremy Lappen
has claimed to several people including members of the California Commission.
A:
Absolutely NOT!
In his own words, Here is what "REALLY'
happened at the IKF Sanctioned, PHANTOM
PROMOTIONS, "Fight Night At The Fox II" on July 11th, 2009
in Redwood City, California, USA...
From
Steve Fossum - IKF/ISCF
President.
Up to this point, this had been a great event. So far
there had been 12 bouts, 4 of them IKF
Title bouts with 2 yet to go. The main event being the IKF
Amateur MTR Women's Bantamweight WORLD
Title between Jenna Castillo and Gina Reyes.
Up now was the IKF Amateur MTR North
American Super Welterweight Title between Skylr Penna and Aaron
Swenson of Illinois. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC)
Inspector assigned to Swenson's corner was Chris Guzman, the son of the events Chief
CSAC
event inspector, Mike Guzman.
During the entire Penna - Swenson bout, I witnessed Chris
talking with the Penna's trainer (Kyle McElroy - Below Left)
and Penna's girlfriend, who was assisting as a cornerwoman. I thought to
myself, "Maybe Chris has become friends with them and he's giving them
some tips...Because I had never seen a CSAC inspector talk so much with ANY trainer
or cornerman, nor are they suppose to."
I knew Swenson's corner man, Kyle McElroy because he had
fought for the IKF years ago. Kyle
won the IKF Tournament title 2 years in a
row. He won the 2000 IKF/Ringside National
Tournament title and the 2001 IKF/Ringside National Tournament title
At the 2000 Tournament,
Kyle won the Full Contact Rules Adult Men's Welterweight title. Kyle
was 24 years old back then and had a fight record of 13-1-1 and was trained by
one of the top trainers in the nation, Rob Zbilski.
Kyle turned professional soon after the 2001 tournament and went on
to fight several more bouts on IKF
Sanctioned events and later even coached his own fighter's, Mark Mortensen
Jr. to win the 2006 IKF World Classic Tournament Title, at
the same Tournament Kyle won his two titles on, back when it was just a
USA National Tournament.
Why is it important to talk about my
history with Kyle?
Well, I need you all to understand that I knew Kyle
pretty well as a person, from his fighting ability to his personality, which is
a personality of a "Fighter". This is important to know as the
story reads on because as you will see in this story, someone got Kyle
pretty riled up and when he needed help, he turned to me in the heat of the
moment...
Back to the pre incident actions of CSAC Inspector Chris Guzman. During
the round breaks of the Penna - Swenson bout, Chris was even
leaning his head through the ropes and talking to Swenson. Again I kept
thinking, "Maybe he is giving Swenson tips, which is totally out of
line, but maybe so." I choose not to go
up and question him about it (Which
I would do on events where the IKF is the lead sanction on in other parts of the
world simply because there is NOT suppose to be any conversation between event
officials and the fight camps during a bout.) since it was a
CSAC
event and I thought if anyone should be saying anything, it should the events
Chief CSAC
Inspector, Chris' dad, Mike Guzman. However Mike never
took any action at all.
Some history about Mike and I. In all the "YEARS"
I have known and worked with Mike Guzman on events in California, there
has NEVER been a negative word spoken by either of us to the other. NEVER!
We have ALWAYS had a great working relationship and to my knowledge,
have always respected each other position and work. This is important for all of
you to know that my past with Mike has never had a negative, disruptive,
argumentive or even frustrated moment between us.
As for Mike's son Chris Guzman, although I had never spoke
to him personally, I had heard numerous complaints on past
CSAC
events where he had propositioned or hit on girl fighters, trainers and even
friends of fighters to the extent of what I would call, "WAY out of
line of his job responsibilities."
The moment the Penna - Swenson bout ended, Kyle got in the
ring and was shouting something but I couldn't tell what. Then he came over to
me at ringside and yelled at me, and pointing at Chris Guzman: "Get
this guy the F#%& away from me! Get him the F#%& out of my face! He has
been yelling at me throughout the entire fight and would not Shut-Up! I couldn't
even coach my fighter because he was talking all the time!"
At this moment, "Knowing Kyle's potential temper"
I said to the judge next to me, "Oh great, I better calm him down."
And I stood up and walked over to Kyle's corner. I walked up the stairs
and witnessed CSAC
Judge Mike Tate yelling at Kyle. (Who for the record is
about 6'3 and around 300 lbs.. In our past, I have always had a good
relationship with Mike on events with NEVER any negative incidents or emotions
toward one another.) From here, I will break it down in an easier to follow
format:
- FOSSUM: "Wait Mike, Kyle's telling the truth, Chris was
talking to him during the entire event, I was watching it happen."

- TATE: "Get off of here!"
- FOSSUM: "Mike, listen to what he's saying, he's not making
it up, Chris was talking to him."
- TATE: "Get off of this ring you have no business here!"
- FOR THE RECORD:
- Just like a Representative for a Pro Boxing sanctioning body such as the
WBC or IBF, actually I did have business there. This was an IKF Sanctioned Title Bout and anything that has to
do with the issues of either of the fighters is included in my list of "RESPONSIBILITY
AND DUTY" as the Chief IKF Event
Representative, to best represent the rules and regulations in regards to all
aspects of an IKF Sanctioned bout, along
with the CSAC.
This is the relationship the IKF and ISCF has had with the
CSAC
for YEARS and it has always been a well respected relationship. Anywhere else in
the world, as the Chief IKF Event
Representative of an event, if there is no State Athletic Commission, it is my "RESPONSIBILITY
AND DUTY" to oversee the entire event, just like a State Commission
would. In this case as well, it was my "RESPONSIBILITY AND DUTY"
to represent the IKF and these fighters by
coming to see what the issue was or problem during the incident unfolding in
front of everyone.
- FOSSUM: "Mike, I know him, let me calm him down."
- TATE: "You have no business being up here! You are NOT an
event official so get out of here!"
- FOSSUM: "Mike, lets not get into this right here."
- TATE: "Get off of this ring right now!"
FOSSUM: "Fine,
we can talk about this later."
As I stepped off the last step of the ring, Tate was following me
down the ring stairs and yelled something at me but I couldn't understand what
he said. I turned to him and said "Excuse me?" And he kept
walking off. I went back and calmly sat down at ringside next to the other judge
and made a comment such as "Well that was pleasant."
At this time, Chris Guzman (Who was still in the ring) came
over to me at ringside and leaned aggressively over the ropes and pointed his
finger at me and asked in a very aggressive tone, "What's your
name!!?" and I replied, Steve Fossum, which he replied, "I'll
remember that!" and turned and walked away.
SPECIAL NOTE: While this incident was happening, neither Chief
CSAC
Inspector Mike Guzman or the bout referee were doing anything to help
calm the incident, which was getting quite heated between
CSAC
inspector Chris Guzman and cornerman Kyle McElroy. At one point,
Chris Guzman even went up and got into Kyle's face and had words
with him. So WHY wasn't the referee and or the Chief
CSAC
Inspector, Mike Guzman taking any action here? That's the bigger
question... WHAT were they doing? I did take action, which like me, it was their
"RESPONSIBILITY AND DUTY" as well to act upon what was
happening. Yet neither ever did. Mike Guzman didn't even know there was
an incident happening until later, and even then, was surprised to hear anything
about it.
So where was Tate going after following me down off the ring? I was
told he rushed over to Chris' dad, Chief
CSAC
Inspector of the event Mike Guzman and started yelling at him! "He
threatened me and I want him out of here!" Mike Guzman asked
him, "Who threatened you?" Tate pointed over my way
where I was sitting at ringside with the other judge and said "He did!"
Within seconds after sitting down, Chris' dad, Chief
CSAC
Inspector of the event Mike Guzman comes up to me at ringside and says;
- MIKE GUZMAN: "Steve!"
- FOSSUM: "Yes"
- MIKE GUZMAN: "Steve you threatened my official, you're out
of here!"
- FOSSUM: "What!"
- MIKE GUZMAN: "You threatened my official, your out of
here!"
- FOSSUM: "Wait Mike, do you even know what happened?"
- MIKE GUZMAN: "What happened?"
- FOSSUM: Tells a 30 second version of what just transpired.
- MIKE GUZMAN: "Fine, you threatened my official, your out
of here!"
- About this time I looked over Mike Guzman's shoulder and there was
the CSAC
Judge I just had words with up on the ring, Mike Tate telling a female
police officer, "That's him, I want him out of here!"
- POLICE OFFICER: "Do you have all your stuff?"
- FOSSUM: The only time I cursed: "Your F****** Kidding me!"
- POLICE OFFICER: "Lets go."
- FOSSUM: "You have got to be kidding me!"
The police officer followed me out the back door along with Kyle McElroy
who was also being ejected from the building.
It's funny how stories grow like Pinocchio's nose... I recently found out
that Jeremy
Lappen (R) the head of the CAMO organization
crafted up quite a
version on his own, which may have been a factor in the CSAC decision about their appointment of an Amateur
MMA Sanctioning body. Lappen has told people I was physically thrown out
of this event because I was drunk and belligerent! After all, what State in
their right mind would appoint a drunken fool's organization ( Our Organization
is the
ISCF,
International Sport Combat Federation - www.ISCFMMA.com ) to
oversee an Amateur Fight Sport? Smart move for Lappen in the CSAC Credit department, but Jeremy, as a
lawyer, even you should know it's a bad move to fabricate such a story for your
own personal gain...
To set the record straight, for those who were not there...I was not drunk
nor was I belligerent. I had not been drinking that day, the day before or
before that... Those of you who do know me know that I'm not a drinker at all! I
was not "Physically" Thrown out or carried out. The ONLY
time the Police Officer even made any physical contact with me was when the
female officer put her hand on my shoulder and said, "Do you have all
your stuff?" There were PLENTY of witnesses who saw me
walk out and funny, Alcohol was never a part of this story until Jeremy
Lappen told it...
Once outside, I put my things in my truck and waited for Referee Dan
Stell. We had drove down to the event together so I couldn't just leave.
While out there, "SEVERAL" people who witnessed the incident
came out to tell me how wrong it was. One of those was a writer for Inside
Kung Fu magazine who shed some positive news that will come in handy for
any potential legal issues surrounding this incident.. "Don't worry
about the 'He said-She said' Steve, I kept my camera rolling and got the
whole incident on tape." So no longer was this a tale of two "Different"
sides or stories. The whole thing was captured on a video tape... So much for
the "Stories" Tate and Guzman would later tell
others to protect their actions.
Because of Tate & Guzman's actions, I was now unable to
witness the nights Main event. An IKF MTR
Women's Bantamweight World Title between Jenna Castillo and Gina
Reyes. THIS is where the legal issues will soon follow. Because of
Tate & Guzman's reckless actions, I was taken away from a
VERY Important IKF Title Bout, and now
there was no IKF Representative in
attendance to witness the bout.
After the Main Event was over and people were leaving, someone came up to me
and said "Tate's really fabricating a story to all the
officials in there. He's saying you cussed at him, and threatened him and a
bunch of other stuff."
Quickly I walked over to the back door and listened to what Tate was
yelling to Guzman and the entire CSAC Officials Staff. However, once he
looked over his right shoulder and saw me standing only about 15 feet away, and
hearing the LIES he was telling, he got quiet and leaned forward to Mike
Guzman and said something and the discussion was over.
As Tate broke from the group, he turned towards the door and "Yelled"
out so everyone could hear him to me;
- TATE: "GET OUT OF MY WAY!"
- FOSSUM: "Excuse me?" I had to say this because I
wasn't in his way, I was standing outside the doorway, off to the side.
- TATE: "I'm only saying this once, I'M A POLICE OFFICER,
GET OUT OF MY WAY!"
- FOSSUM: "Are you threatening me?"
- TATE: "MOVE!"
- FOSSUM: "Sure."
Tate huffed through the door and went outside and lit up a
cigarette. I stood by the door and waited for Dan. Mike Guzman came out
ahead of Dan and said to me, "Do you want to talk about this
Steve?" and I replied, "I would love to talk about it."
Mike and I went off to the side and I once again, but in more
detail, explained to him what happened between Tate and I. He kept
defending his position and I kept bringing up our past history, and my past
history with the commission. A history where there had NEVER, in all my years
associated with the CSAC
(Dating back to the late 1980's) been ANY negative incidents to justify
such an action by him. Why would I even consider, let alone carry out any such
threat to anyone associated with the CSAC knowing I will work with the
CSAC
in the future since California is my home state. There was just no logic at all
in the claimed action. NONE!
He changed his tone and said;
- MIKE GUZMAN: "Look Steve, I'm not going to suspend you."
- FOSSUM: "Suspend me? What authority would you have to
suspend me? I don't work with the Commission, and I'm not even licensed under
the Commission, so how as well as why would you even consider such an action?"
- MIKE GUZMAN: "OK Steve, as far as I'm concerned, this
incident didn't even happen, so if anything is said about it, it will be your
decision."
- FOSSUM: "So you expect me to just sweep it under the rug?
You publicly embarrass me and you want me to forget about it?"
- MIKE GUZMAN: "I'm just saying, I'm not going to write up
any report about this and if you want to, well then you will force me to get
statements from the other officials and bring it to the commission."
- FOSSUM: "So you want me to just forget about it? Act as if
it never happened?"
- MIKE GUZMAN: "It's your decision Steve."
- FOSSUM: "Well Mike, I can't just let it go."
- MIKE GUZMAN: "Ok, but as far as I'm concerned, it's over
and if anything becomes of it, it's your decision."
- FOSSUM: "Well I guess I will do what I need to do."
That was how the night ended.
Here
is a timeline as to what has taken place since
"The
Incident"
- JULY 12th, 2009: Event results were posted on the
JULY NEWS PAGE.
- JULY 17th, 2009: I left for our 2009 IKF World Classic
Tournament in Orlando Florida.
- JULY 24th, 25th & 26th 2009: Orlando, Florida, USA, hosting the
2009 IKF
World Classic Tournament.
- AUGUST 5th, 2009: Despite knowing that the
ISCF
was not a "Non Profit" sanctioning body for mixed martial
arts, an e-mail was sent to me from Bill Douglas, (Interm Executive
Director of the California State Athletic Commission at the time) inviting
me to the next upcoming meeting to present the
ISCF's
Rules and Regulations to the commission.

Steve, We'll be having an Amateur
Mixed Martial Arts committee meeting sometime the week of the 17th. The
Committee will be making a recommendation on which organization to recommend to
the Commission at that meeting. Please prepare a presentation as well as a rules
comparison in advance of that meeting. The rules comparison is a version of your
amateur mma rules in relation to CSAC amateur rules and how your rules will meet
or exceed any standards that CSAC has for amateur sports. Details on the meeting
will follow. Thank you.
Bill Douglas
Assistant Executive Officer
California State Athletic Commission
- AUGUST 9th, 2009: Returned back from 2009 IKF World Classic
Tournament in Orlando Florida.
- When I returned, I was soon informed that despite what he told me,
CSAC
official Mike Guzman had already rounded up several statements from
officials at the event and had already informed some of the office staff at the
head CSAC
office in Sacramento, "His Version" of the incident.
- AUGUST 10th, 2009: Spoke to former
CSAC
Inspector Frank Munoz about "The Incident." Frank
said he would get with Bill Douglas and Che Guevara to schedule
a meeting or see if it should be put on the next monthly Commission Meeting
Agenda for discussion. I suggested a private meeting with just those involved
first and if the issues are not satisfied from it, then we can move forward with
a meeting on the Commission Agenda.
No such meeting was ever discussed
or scheduled. It later became clear that the office staff, like Mike Guzman,
just wanted to sweep the incident under a rug and make it go away as if it
never happened.
- AUGUST 10th, 2009: After receiving the above e-mail from Bill
Douglas, I replied back to Bill, and again, asked when a meeting would be set
for "The Incident":

Hi Bill,
Thank you for the info. Where will this meeting be held and do you have an
actual time and date yet?
On another issue, I need to know when the meeting
will be in regards to "The Incident" at Brian Schwartz' event back on
July 11th with Myself and Mike Tate, Mike Guzman (Spelling ?) and his son. As
you may have noticed by our auto reply e-mail, I have been out of California
since July 17th and in Florida for our IKF World Tournament. I just returned
this weekend. I have already spoken to Frank about the incident prior to leaving
and have had several other people inquire to me directly about it as well. We
need to address this as soon as possible now that I am back in California. If
you desire, please feel free to call me at my office or on my cell if I'm not
in; O: (916) 663-2467 C: (916) xxx-xxxx
Thanks again Bill and we look
forward to your reply.
Sincerely Steve Fossum
- No e-mail or phone call reply was ever given.
- AUGUST 17th, 2009: After numerous un-returned calls to Bill
Douglas and Che Guevara to discuss "The Incident,"
I finally reached Bill Douglas today and gave him "My side"
of the story. I also informed him of the video tape that was in my possession of
the incident and assured him, "Don't take my word for it, just watch
the tape." He assured me he would speak to those involved and schedule
a meeting for us all to attend...
During this conversation, I again brought
up the issue of our
ISCF MMA Sanctioning Body not being a "Non
Profit" Sanctioning body for MMA and told him I don't plan to attend
the upcoming meeting. He assured me that the Commission was not going to base
their decision on the "Non Profit" requirement and that I
should definitely attend.
Sadly, no meeting was ever scheduled on "The
Incident"...
- AUGUST 20th, 2009:
- A $500 plane ticket was purchased last minute by me, on the advice of
CSAC Assistant Executive Officer
Bill Douglas to attend the upcoming Amateur MMA meeting in Los Angeles
California. The CSAC MMA Committee met to
determine who they will delegate the authority to sanction Amateur MMA to.
- Over half way into the meeting, commissioner Mario Rodriguez spoke
up and said, "OK, do all of you have your NON Profit paperwork in
order?" There were 3 sanctioning bodies there, us (ISCF), KICK
International and of course CAMO. Despite Kick International's bad reputation
around the USA, at least they had experience in regulating events. CAMO had
none... ZERO!
- What about that "Non Profit" question? Well, that of
course was a shot in the dark to me since I was assured by Bill Douglas
that Rodriguez and the others were not making their decision based upon
the "Non Profit" status. If so, why would I want to buy a $500
plane ticket to attend this meeting...?
- Wow, was I stupid! As time past, it was more and more clear who Mario
Rodriguez was going to appoint to oversee Amateur MMA. Adding to this, how
did the ISCF get a bad name in the mix?
- Sources have told us that CAMO's top man,
Jeremy Lappen
had informed Mario
Rodriguez and others that ISCF and
Steve Fossum would be a bad choice because of "The Incident"
back in July, but Lappen gave his own version. That I was kicked out of
an event for being drunk and belligerent while being a sanctioning official at
an event...Surly the State does not want to appoint someone like Steve
Fossum... Nice Lie Lappen... I'm looking forward to you sharing
it with me...
- "The Incident?" must have offered perfect timing for
Lappen and his associates. ESPECIALLY since few knew yet what had really
happened.
- We won't share the source, but the words out of some of those associated
with CAMO made some comments such as;
- "Our only true competition in this appointment is going to be the
ISCF who is based in California and they have been doing this for years. How can
we look more attractive to the Commission then them? How can we do to discredit
them?"
- Looks like Lappen did a good job if it...
- Worse yet, we found out later that they only wanted me to be at this
meeting just so they could "Appear" they were giving
consideration to more than 1 or 2 sanctioning bodies. KICK International's trip
was a wasted one as well and they came out from St. Louis, Missouri. What did
the knowledgable public have to say about CAMO's appointment?
- "I found it odd that the Commission selected 'Anyone' at all at
yesterday's meeting." said Jeff Starks, a reporter for an MMA site. "Although
CAMO has all their non-profit paperwork in place, it doesn't mean they know what
is involved in regulating an MMA event, I think the State is in for quite a
surprise in the coming months. The real question though is, 'Do they really
care?' and it appears not."
- AUGUST 24th, 2009: Without any surprise, today the California
State Athletic Commission (CSAC) delegated
authority of amateur MMA to the newly formed California Amateur Mixed Martial
Arts Organization (CAMO). CSAC
commissioner Mario Rodriguez, who co-chaired a committee with
commissioner June Collision that reviewed and selected candidate
organizations on August 20th, said amateur MMA could be enacted as soon as CAMO
is capable to oversee it.
- What has become of Mario Rodriguez since?
NOVEMBER 2009: Members of the California
State Athletic Commission have agreed to pay fines for accepting free tickets
for fights from promoters in 2008 and 2009. The FPPC launched an investigation
into the commissioners after The Times reported in September that they were
accepting tickets for friends and family members in apparent violation of state
gift limits. The fines are $2,500 for Timothy Noonan, the former chairman;
$2,000 for Commissioner Mario Rodriguez.
- Check out the readings at these links, makes you wonder who else he
took GIFT Money From:
- AUGUST 27th, 2009: I made a phone call to CSAC
Inspector Frank Munoz and again explained "The Incident"
to him and informed him that until it gets resolved, we respectfully suggest
that the 3 CSAC Officials involved, not be
assigned to any IKF/ISCF
Sanctioned events in California. Frank said he agreed and didn't see a
problem with it but said I should e-mail Che Guevara about it. I said I
would.

Subject: RE: Issues with Judge for Sept 6th Event.
Hi Che,
Frank told me I had to e-mail you about this. We are sanctioning the
upcoming event that Johnny Davis is promoting on September 6th at Tommy T's
Comedy and Dinner Theatre in Rancho Cordova, California, USA On this event you
currently have scheduled, judges Susan Thomas Gitlin and Marshall Walker. Along
with them, you also currently have Judge Mike Tate scheduled to work
this event. I would like to respectfully ask if you could schedule another
judge instead of Mr. Tate for this event. My reasons for this is
because the issues of "The Incident" that occurred at Brian Schwartz's
event this past summer, created by Mr. Tate and Inspector Mike Guzman
(Spelling ?) have yet to be discussed and resolved. Until we all meet
personally to discuss and resolve these issues I have been advised that it would
be best not to work with these individuals on our IKF or ISCF events.
Thanking
you in advance on this issue.
In addition, I have discussed "The
Incident" with Bill and Frank and have asked them both when we can schedule
a meeting about "The Incident". However, as of this day, no meeting
date has been set. I feel due to the potential legal issues this incident could
create between myself, the IKF, Guzman, Tate and the Commission, it
would be in everyone's best interest to address this in a meeting among everyone
as soon as possible at the Sacramento Commission Office or here at our office,
whichever is more convenient for your staff.
Thanks Che and I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely Steve Fossum
- AUGUST 31st, 2009: Finally got in touch with
CSAC
Inspector Che Guevara. As I brought up the request to not have any of
the 3 officials work the upcoming IKF
event, Che informed me that this was the Promoters job to do this and
that it needs to be done 7 days in advance of an event. I informed him that I
had e-mailed him on Thursday, August 27, 2009 4:06 PM about it, but never
received any reply. I also noted that I had made "Several"
calls to both him and Bill last week to discuss this, but neither
returned my calls. Che said he would do what he can but couldn't make
any promises.
- SEPTEMBER 2nd, 2009: With issues of trust in question, Frank
Munoz sends out his letter of resignation from the office staff at the
CSAC to people he knows in the fight
business;
"As of September 10, 2009, I will no longer be a
full-time staff member of the California State Athletic Commission. Keep in
mind, you will most likely still see me at events in the capacity of an
Inspector or at times a spectator."
- SEPTEMBER 6th, 2009: AK Promotions & Tommy T's "IKF
Kickboxing", Rancho Cordova, California, USA.
Despite my respectful
letter to Che and others in the CSAC office, Guess who is one of the judges
on this event... Mike Tate.
There were no incidents at the
event...
- SEPTEMBER 6th, 2009 - FEBRUARY 11th, 2010: After waiting almost 6
more months, there has still never been any meeting scheduled to discuss "The
Incident." No apology, no discussion, nothing. I continue to ask that none
of the 3 officials involved be assigned to IKF
or ISCF Sanctioned events.
Chris Guzman (R)
Chris
has since been fired from the CSAC and no
one wants to talk about why...
- Mike Tate
You have to feel a little sorry for a big guy like
Mike Tate to feel he was threatened... Simply, he felt challenged and
instead of working with me during "The Incident" he choose to
instead, have me kicked out of the event by Police before our IKF Main Event. Adding to this, we later found out
that he was not only NOT a Police Officer at the time he yelled, "I'm
only saying this once, I'M A POLICE OFFICER, GET OUT OF MY WAY!" but we
also have been informed that on the night of "The Incident"
that he showed the Police Officer on duty in the venue a badge and said, "I
have a guy who just threatened a police officer and I want him out of here!"
Which is the real reason the Police became involved because usually, such an
ejection is only valid from the event Promoter, who was as lost as everyone else
about the whole "Incident".
- The Oakland Police Department was especially interested about Tate's
false claim of being a Police Officer at the time of this incident when we spoke
to them last year, and they are STILL interested.
- Mike Guzman
Despite our requests to not have him work IKF or ISCF
Sanctioned events until we have our sit down talk (Which now appears more
and more likely it just isn't going to happen) has worked 3 IKF Sanctioned events since our first request to not
have him at one... Maybe we are not asking the right way...
Oddly
enough, I still like Mike Guzman and our relationship at all 3 of these
recent events has been professional. I truly believe he was pressured into his
actions by Tate who felt his ego challenged when I was trying to help
calm the situation down. Instead, Tate wanted to escalate it to a
different level and be aggressive. However, the fact remains that Mike
Guzman did take an action of his own as an adult man, just like Tate
did. Although both acted reckless and carelessly, they were both individuals in
their actions and both are responsible for the consequences of those actions,
which are yet to come.
Seems the CSAC wants to just
sweep this incident away... Like Mike Guzman wanted to that night... As
if it never happened...
To add, writer Daniel Rauch who writes articles for various
publications including Inside Kung Fu witnessed the entire incident.
Rauch later wrote an article for publication and at the end of his
article, it reads;
"The California State Athletic Commission
declined to comment on the events of the evening or state whether an official
apology would be offered. Recent drastic changes in the laws are going to allow
many more live MMA, kickboxing, and fight sports events in California. Governor
Schwarzenegger would do best to fill his commission with former fighters and
officials who understand the game, and care for the welfare and safety of the
fighters, as opposed to those who haven't demonstrated any knowledge of martial
arts."
What will be added next to this page.... We too are eager to see...
