I just read the news page, can someone explain the 1/2 point system to me?
I think I have a handle...sort of, on the 10 point must system, but how is a 1/2 point system scored?

Hey Geek, I think that the idea was to give more flexibility to the judges. Since it is rare to see a judge give a 10-8 round without a knockdown, the idea was to let judges differentiate between someone squeaking out a round versus someone dominating. A nice idea, in theory, but it ultimately makes it easier to favor the hometown fighter. Judges might get called on the mat if they are giving 10-8 rounds for no reason, but with the 1/2 point system, you can give a fighter an insurmountable lead in a few rounds.
Here's an example. Because it's just an illustration, I'll pick two fighters who will probably never meet in their careers. How about me and Brian Schwartz?http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/wwwboard/images/smilies/smile.gif
Let's say that even with judges that are there to keep me from winning, I manage to win 7 rounds to Brian's 5. On a regular 10 point must, I win. But on the 1/2 point system, the judges can have me win the rounds 10-9.5, and have Brian win 10-9. Then the totals are:
Randy 115
Brian 116.5
In that case, Randy is a big, fat loser. Now, since I'm out of the picture, I'm a big fat loser and I don't have to get kicked in the head to prove it.http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/wwwboard/images/smilies/wink.gif
The 1/2 point system would be great if the world were an honest place, and if judges were competent, but I think it's probably not the best scoring system, although ring sports in general need an updated scoring system, and accountability for the judges, cutting away the incompetent and corrupt.
Speaking of incompetent judges, the judges at my last boxing match were atrocious. One scored it 40-36 for me. The second had it 40-33 for me. There were no knockdowns or standing 8's, but he scored three 10-8 rounds. The third guy called it a draw. I think people in Ohio do a lot of drugs, and not very good ones.
That's all for now. Peace.

P.S. Speaking of cutting away the incompetent and corrupt, vote out George W. Bush this November. http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/wwwboard/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

i agree with randy. the 1/2 point system can favor a home town fighter. you win the round or you don't.... 10-9, if you dominate the whole round, knockdown or a standing 8.... 10-8, if you are knocked down 2 times or 8 counts.... 10-7. the half point just makes it easy to squeak a winner in where he shouldn't have. it's hard enough to watch a round and judge it (well he didn't really win the round but he came close so i'll give him a 9.5)   (your judges and crowd will look like that). now you know what randy means by a home town boy winning a fight. thank you, take care.

RP,
Thanks for the info. I like the 10 point must system better.
Maybe we could just eliminate judges and have it go until someone is KO'd or quits. Sort of old school like when they had 26 rounds of boxing.
What is your take on the IKF pulling off the card? Good, Bad, indifferent. Would you fight for the title in Schwart'z home town with the 1/2 point system?
Maybe this could be a new thread, but, maybe the IKF can answer this.
Would it be possible to have an agreement (maybe it was even brought up?) that this time they use the 1/2 point system, but that the defense of the titles on the next fight has to use the 10 point must system. At the point thereafter it is up to the title holder. Just trying to be a fight geek arbitrator.

Well, I'm mixed in my opinion. From an unbiased standpoint, it was a good move because the way a fight is judged is critical in determining a champion, and the IKF allowing a champion to be crowned according to another organization's rules is a recipe for trouble.
Personally, I'm glad that I'm not missing out on TWO opportunities, instead of one. Although, I've been enjoying the sweet life lately, or rather a life of sweets, and I don't know how much longer I'll be able to make the trip all the way down to 172 lbs. So, I might not have been the best choice of champ at that weight anyway, in the long run.
The good thing about the unification was, no matter who won, it was not being won by monkey-boy Bartinelli, who apparently was stumping for it. That issue should be moot, however, after Zack Day slaps the ish out of Bartinelli on Nov. 6.

The half point system SUCKS! ikf did a good job denying the sanctioning of this bout, not because of who was fighting but because of the junk half point system! ;) iska needs to dump cory schafer and his half point bull**** -or can you dump yourself from your own org?- because he doesnt know jack about the fight game! for the bout itself, i puck schwartz by decision over tommy, who will end up facing bartanalli after he ko's poor zack in 3 at rays show. randy wont fight either of them because he will be hired by the john kerry camp to give him motivational seminars for months if not years to come out of his bedroom after a landslide loss to george bush. i know randy can help him because like kerry, randy has a plan.

Could someone please explain to those like me who are not well schooled in the fight game why judges are reluctant to score a 10-8 when a fighter has been dominated and perhaps even hurt in a round yet never goes down. Isn't that at least as important as a flash knockdown. Thanks
