I got a brief and garbled voice message this morning. It appears as if everyone is there safe & sound, and everyone made weight. Jenna, Terri, and Peyton have not fought yet. I think I heard correctly that Stevie D. lost a decision, Tommy Bach won, and Stephen's opponent threw the towel in the 2nd round. I don't know anything else about the fights.

It says on the WAKO website that this tournament runs from 12-01-05 through 12-05-05. This would make the tournament start tomorrow. Anyhow, kick some _ _ _ USA!

Nice try, Geek.

They are 6-7 hrs. ahead. I got a message this morning, Wed., which was Wed. afternoon there, after they were done fighting.

Michael, they were told about a week before they left that because there were so many competitors, they would have to start the fights on the 30th.

Also Gert Lemmens from Germany (the guy that Stephen fought for the IASKA Gold Medal) lost his first fight by split decison to a Hungarian. So Stephen and Gert will not meet again until next time.....MAYBE. Good Luck tomorrow all US FCR team members are scheduled to fight.

Congratulations on making it this far TEAM USA. I've heard that this event has some of the best pro's in Europe. It's amazing to see what happens to fighters who first compete in, and many times win, the IKF tournament.

I keep missing the phone calls, so I'm going off of voice mail.
Terri, Tommy, & Peyton all lost decisions.
Stephen won again, and Jenna scored a 1st round TKO in her 1st bout.
They are apparently the only remaining American fighters.

Hello from Hungary. The WAKO tournament is huge. They have three rings and five mats. There are somewhere around 1100 fighters here. Including the light , and continuous contact. The total number of full contact kickboxers is 209. You will probably be getting a few more posts since the USA team (including Jean Luc) found an internet cafe in town. Everything has been well run so far. The kick count is kind of funky here. Just like in the states 6 kicks are mandatory. Here it cannot just be an attempt at a power kick it has to land and land hard. Stevie lost his first fight to the Irish National Champion . It was a tuff fight and Stevie was taken out of his game a litltle having to throw 20 kicks a round to get his 6 in.
Stephen knocked his first opponent out with a back leg round kick to the head. The opponent was from the Italian team. His second opponent was from Great Britian and was a tough brawler type fighter. Stephen out pointed him to win the unanimous decision.
Tommy Bach easily defeated his first opponent from Mexico and lost a decision to his second opponent from Croatia.
Jenna Droluk stopped her first opponet with a body kick in the first. The girl was from Germany
Peyton lost to a tough guy from Poland I think.
Terry Hicks fought a tough girl with good kicks who got three points deducted for holding but still won the decision.
We are all having fun.

Hello from theinternet cafe. Just as Megan said Jenna won a unanimous decision against I think a German. Stephen beat the crap out of a cock deisel guy from Poland. All of these guys are ripped. The funny thing is today alot of spectators came to the event with their big wigs on and there faces paints with horns. To cheer for the point fighters? Pretty funny? I do not have anything against point fighters but I think someone getting hit hard is much more exciting than a gam of tag.

Geek, Craig and Pammy are lame old people. http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/wwwboard/images/smilies/tongue.gif I would be willing to bet that Ronnie has never heard of that line of clothing, and I haven't either. Old Googlers are probably the only ones who know of those clothes. http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/wwwboard/images/smilies/wink.gif

Anyway, old folks, the words "cocked" and "diesel" are both slang for someone with alot of muscles. Y'know, jacked, buff, cut, ripped, etc. "Cocked-diesel" is just another term. Also applies to whatever you have that's really pimped out, like a stereo system.

Dorks. http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/wwwboard/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Pam, ask your kids.
Craig, ask one of your girlfriends.
Geek, umm... best of luck.

Getting back on topic, there is a big nighttime show tomorrow, featuring several, like four or so, finals matches. Stephen will most likely be one of them, as he's a superstar out there, and with good reason. I doubt the big girls will make the cut for that show, but you never know. More than likely, Jenna's fight will be on Sunday.

To all back home. This is Ray Thompson. I am posting under Ronnie's name. It has been a great experience here so far. Ronnie quoted the number for the FCR division as 208 but the actual number is 218, 169 adult men and 49 adult female. There is a whole mess of point and continuous fighters also. All adults, no kids. If I am correct this is the first time since the early 90's that there has been a US fighter fighting for a gold. Mike Anderson actually said that "it has been forever since we have fought for the gold" so I just assume, early 90's since Mike can't remember what happened yesterday. Don't tell him I said that. Ronnie just told me that Ray McCallum (former WAKO World Champ of both point and FCR) said it has been 1985 since the US has won gold and the US dominated that event. Jenna fights tomorrow for the gold at the sat. gala (as they like to call it) and Stephen fights on Sunday in that gala. I have been told that the venue only holds 3500 spectators but have sold more than 5000 tickets. Now this does not count all the teams that will get in for free. IT WILL BE CRAZY!!!!!
To give some high lights on Jenna and the Wonderboy, Jenna fought her first fight with some awesome lead leg round kicks TO THE HEAD (Randy I am taking all the credit for her kicks) then she dropped some bombs with the right hand too (taking credit for them too) to stop her opponent with a right leg round house to the body. What a fight, Jenna looked awesome (thanks to MEEEEE). Her second fight was against a BIG (heavy) girl that came straight at her, she is known as the female Michael Dean (LOL) of Europe, she comes at you hands a blazin. Jennas kicks took her game away with GREAT front and side kicks knocking her down on several occasions (and getting no credit for the knock downs) and she followed with good hands to complete her unanimous victory. As for the Wonderboy, what can I say, it was biz as usual. His first fight was against an Italian which ended in the second with a kick to the head. His second was against a British Bull Dog that attempted to eat the Wonderboys liver BUT had little luck, for Stephen commenced to pick him apart with great movement and solid punches and kicks all about the head and shoulders winning on all the judges cards (and BUSTING his nose, what a mess), his fight today was against a Latvian who was just like Ronnie said. He came hard for three rounds but paid dearly for it. He fights Sunday for the gold. That's about all for now. Hope to update you soon.

OH, just a little note on the Italian fighter the Wonderboy fought and kicked in the head, he broke the guys jaw in three places and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Sicily. The Wonderboy does not know this and does not need to know until the tournament is over, please!!!!

I did, that is how I learned it was a line of clothes!! My college age son was sitting here when I read it and I asked him, he told me it was a cool line of clothes for meatheads. I kinda gathered from their website that it was meant for muscles, but I was being nice. :p

If you go to the home page of www.craigsmithkarate.com the pic is there.

The WAKO Gala yesterday was awesome. It started a 4pm with the venue nearly at capacity between the teams and the spectators. To start off the show they had two Hungarian music groups perform that were top 40 artists. ( i actuallz saw the vidoe on TV at the hotel. The Hungarian Kickboxing Federation spared no expense. After that they had a dance troop perform and then some traditional hungarian dancers. After the performances Bill Wallace came out and did a kicking demo. Then Don Wilson did a sparring exhibition with a German fighter. The first 10 fights of the night were Hungarian fighters. ( A mixture of light, semi, and full contact ) The Hungarian crowd was crazy with there chanting and screaming.
The second fight of the night was a point fight between a Hungarian and a U.S. fighter Joey Greenhaugh (sp?) Joey schooled the hungarian to win the Gold or the USA.
The eleventh fight of the evening was Stephen versus a Russian. Like Megan said it was the toughest fight of Stpehens career. The Russian was STRONG and could go. In the First the Russian cut the ring off on Stephen and took his movement away. (Something I have never seen anyone do.) Stephen is not just a stick and move technician he is a warrior that can get down in the trenchs and bang. Standing toe to toe with the guy Stephen hit him with a straight left at the end of the first and rocked him. The first was a tough round but if I were scoring I would have given him the round, no to mention the Russian missed his kicks. ( I think think the russian stratigey was too cut the ring off and take him out)
The second round was more of the same a close quarters battle. The russian actually hit Stephen with a couple of bombs in this round. Stephen took them with no problem and fired back hurting the russian again with a straight left.
Most of the crowd had gone home after the Hungarians were finished but the teams and the crowd that remained was going crazy. Teams USA and Team Russia were beside each other in the bleachers. They had the dueling chants going U...S....A and Rus...si...a.
Round three Was more of the same. At the end of the round Stephen hurt the Russian bad with a left hand. The russian was dazed and falling Stephen through a back leg round kick to finish him but just grazed him on top of the head. The russian fell into the ropes and the bell rang saving him.
Stephen won the unanimous decision and the gold medal.

Jenna fought fight thirteen against a Morrocian fighter. Jenna came out in the first half of the first and took her to school. The second half the Morroccian was busier. The second an third were really close the girl from Moroco just a little busier. Still a great effort to win the Silver medal as the first women ever to compete in full contact from the United States.
During Jennas fight the germans as well as the russians joined the USA chant.
Congrats to Stephen Jenna and everyone on the united states team. Even though I could not fight I am happy to have been here and been a part of it all. Tonight 12-4 we are having the after fight party and excahgin gifts with the other teams.

was the wako tournament in hungary an amatuer tournament?

Ronnie Copeland
12-08-2005, 07:27 PM
Pros and amateurs fight each other. Head gear is required for all participants. In Europe if fighting is not your sole source of income you are not considered a pro. On a side not one thing I thought was cool was that the event supplied the gloves footpads and headgear. The only thing that was not suppplied was cup mouthpiece and shins guards. That was everyone had the same stuff on.

havoc
12-08-2005, 07:40 PM
thanks for clearing that up.i know in muaythai in europe they have class rankings.maybe they don't have that in full contact.

i just know there was a big stink about this a few years ago with either the k.i.c.k. or the w.k.a. allowing pros to fight ams.

Ronnie Copeland
12-08-2005, 09:14 PM
It was KICK who contimplated doing an event modeled after WAKO with pro and ams fighting together. It did not happen alot of people started raising hell about it. After seeing the WAKO tournament I think it would probably not be a bad idea.

Randy Pogue
12-09-2005, 07:04 AM
I think it would rock! As a distance fighter, I think going back to 3-rounders would be a big disadvantage... I even have trouble with 5-rounders. That, plus headgear and bigger gloves, would definitely make a pro/am tournament be competitive.

Plus, with Stephen Thompson mopping up the pros, and with Bill Jardine embarrassing Nick Rondinelli, in Bill's pro debut, after Nick just went 12 rounds in a split decision world title fight, there's obviously not much difference in quality between top amatuers and the pros.

Do it. Do it.

P.J. Reilly
12-09-2005, 08:02 AM
Being an amateur myself, I'd be willing to compete in that.

jean-luc
12-09-2005, 08:12 AM
The WAKO has rankings in full contact on its site (http://www.wakoweb.com/rankings/full.htm#851) but they have not yet been updated and they still reflect the results of the previous world championships (Paris 2003).

jean-luc
12-09-2005, 08:44 AM
I think the next WAKO world championship is scheduled for end-October 2007 somewhere in Switzerland. As far as I know, each national team may only have one competitor in each division. I don't know how the selection of the US team is made. Perhaps you could ask Mike Anderson, who was in Szeged.

Ronnie Copeland
12-09-2005, 09:13 AM
I think that a pro/am tournament would be awesome. Their are no true pros in the United States anyway. What I mean by pro is someone who makes a living off of kickboxing.(Kickboxing costs me money. I go to work to support my kickbxoing habit!) Like Randy said the guys who are used to fighting 12 rounds are going to be at a disadvantage in a 3 round fight. After seeing the WAKO tournament I think we could not find a better model to go follow.

Ray Thompson
12-09-2005, 09:01 PM
After the WAKO event I could not agree with you guys more. It was the most intense, organized (I must admit better than my events) and largest tournament I've ever attended. There were 218 adult full contact kickboxers. There were no kids only adults, which I think would be a mistake if we omitted the jr fighters. There were point fighters (WAKO calls then semi-contact) and continious (WAKO says light contact) fighters there but I do not know there numbers. It was great. It would be nice if the IKF and WAKO could join forces here in the US and promote a pro/am tournament. At the event in Hungary all full contact fighters wore WAKO issued Top Ten head gear, 10 oz Top Ten gloves and Top Ten boots. There were no worn out boots in the place. It was great. Did I say "it was great"? Anyway hope we move forward to something like that.

I think anything to increase the fight availability for kickboxing is a good idea. Besides, I want a rematch with Jardine and would love to fight pro fighters. As a businessman, it is not worth the risk to fight without headgear. Is it legal for an amateur to fight a pro if amateur rules apply in the US?

Ronnie Copeland
12-10-2005, 05:36 PM
In NC the commision leaves it up to the sanctioning body in kickboxing to decide the definition of a pro of am.

There are a lot of pictures of the championships in Hungary on the site of the WAKO : http://worldchampionships.kickbox.hu/hun/index.php?s=albums
Meanwhile, I found the name of the place where the 2007 championships will be held : it's Meiringen, in the centre of Switzerland. Seems to be a very nice place. It's famous because the "meringue" was invented there (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meringue) and also because it’s there that Sherlock Holmes dies, falling in a ravine during a fight with his arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty.

About Peyton Russell, I honestly believe he was better than most other fighters in his division but he was unlucky to face in his first fight one of the best fighters in his division, Bogumil Polonski, from Poland, who was European vice-champion last year in Montenegro, where he only lost to Russian Maxim Voronov, who was also the world champion in Paris in 2003. Similarly, this year, Polonski was eliminated by the Russian who eventually won the title.

Yes, This is the same. Peyton will be ready to let it rip on Jan 21st in Ct. This WCL event should be a schorcher!!!

jean-luc
01-06-2006, 02:10 AM
What surprises me a bit is that in Hungary, according to the WAKO, Greenhalg fought in the -89 kilos (+/- 200 lbs) divison, while Peyton fought in the 81 kilos (+/- 184 lbs) one. Stephen would have been much closer in weight to Greenhalg (in Hungary, he weighted 85 kilos, if I remember well).
Anyway, good luck to both Peyton and Stephen. I wish I could be there.
