Duke Roufus
Has Revenge On Mind
In Comeback

Written By GARY D'AMATO gdamato@journalsentinel.com at www.jsonline.com

Former world heavyweight kickboxing champion Duke Roufus (Left) ticks off a number of reasons he decided to come out of retirement after three years. Nagging injuries he suffered during his run as a four-time *world champion have healed. He's changed his workouts and diet and added 15 pounds of muscle to his frame. He still spars with International Kickboxing Federation contenders he trains at the Duke Roufus Kickboxing & Boxing Academy in Milwaukee. And, oh yeah, there's the revenge angle.

Six years ago, Roufus lost to Sinisa Andrijasevic (Right) of Croatia, the reigning WKA World heavyweight champion, in a controversial bout in Trieste, Italy. On Friday, Roufus gets another shot at Andrijasevic on an IKF Professional kickboxing and ISCF mixed martial arts show at the Ramada Airport Convention Center Grand Ballroom, 6401 S. 13th St. in Milwaukee.

The show, called "Heavyweight Gladiators Return to *Colosseum," starts at 6:PM and includes seven pro kickboxing and mixed martial arts bouts. "It left a very bitter taste in my mouth," the 35-year-old Roufus said of his 99 loss to Andrijasevic. "I expect a very heated confrontation. I've got some surprises waiting for my Croatian buddy." Roufus said he was injured in the first encounter when Andrijasevic used an illegal judo-style hip throw in the second round. The confused WKA referee was giving Roufus time to recover when, after some commotion at ringside, he suddenly started a 10-count. Roufus staggered to his feet at the count of nine, but Andrijasevic pounced on him and quickly ended the contest. "It was pretty controversial," Roufus said. "I've lost to some good fighters, but the way this fight went down, it was a cheap shot."

Roufus weighed 225 then but weighs 240 now. He said he has been training since December 1st for this fight. "I'm not the same fighter I was in 1999," he said. "I'm older, but I'm more mature and well-rounded. I'm a very strong 240 pounds. I've kind of built more armor on my body. I've almost got the mentality of a middle linebacker for the Packers." Roufus doesn't know if his comeback will be a one-fight deal or if he'll take more matches. He said he turned down a K-1 pay-per-view offer in order to fight Andrijasevic in Milwaukee. "I've fought on five continents, but there's nothing like fighting in Milwaukee," he said. "I'll be in my own little Lambeau Field. I don't want to burden myself with any other thoughts except winning this match in front of me. I've got to win. I'm ready to fight hard." In another bout, heavyweight Horace "The Real Deal" Craft of Cudahy takes on eight-time world champion Mason Gibson of Chicago. Greta "Mo' Betta" Hicks of Milwaukee is featured in one of three pro mixed martial arts bouts.

(*) The Romans called the Colosseum "Caesar's Amphitheatre" or "hunting theatre"; the name Colosseum dates back to the XI century, and it's origin is uncertain. The most popular version is that the name comes from a colossal statue of Nero, called indeed Colossus Neronis, that at first was in the Domus Aurea. The statue was one of the most visible (and arrogant) features of Nero's residence: a 36 meter (120 ft) bronze statue of Nero placed just outside the entrance. This monstrosity was built in imitation of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Colossus was later dedicated by Vespasian to the Sun God - after replacing its face - and then affixed with the heads of several emperors, until Hadrian moved it near the amphitheatre. The transfer of the statue in itself seems to have been an admirable feat. Discussion among the experts is still open, though, because some have argued that 1) there is no substantial evidence of the presence of the statue near the amphitheatre; 2) the name Colosseum appears only from the XI century, when the statue had long disappeared.

(*) Roufus won his IKF World Title on December 4th, 1998 in Milwaukee Wisconsin, USA (Right) over Hiriwa TeRangi of New Zealand by unanimous decision 50-43 on all 3 judges cards. He defended it once with a first round KO over Grant Barker of Sydney Australia. Roufus voluntarily vacated his Super Heavyweight Title to move down to the Heavyweight Muay Thai Division. He later retired. However, at the end of October, 2000 he announced he would come out of retirement to fight in the K-1 USA. He lost his second round bout in the May, 2001 K-1 USA and his opening round bout in the August K-1 USA. On December 11th, 2002 he made his retirement official due to his busy schedule with promoting his own events and other work. His final fight record was 36-8-1/26 and in pro boxing he was 2-0/1.

This Pitbull Bites With Knees!
Scott Clark Captures
IKF Amateur World Title In Canada!

The Canadian flag flew high and proud in Calgary, Alberta, Canada last night as 2004 IKF Amateur Muay Thai North American Champion Scott "Pitbull" Clark added yet another piece of IKF Gold to his trophy case. A Trophy case filled with plenty of Gold already mind you. Clark used a barrage of knees in an explosive knee attack to drop his opponent, Nenad Grujic of Switzerland to the ground at 1:32 of round 2 of the scheduled 5 round bout. It would be there that Grujic would stay until referee Tim Yorke finished the full 10 count making the official win time at 1:42 of round 2. The win earned Clark the IKF Amateur Light Heavyweight World MuayThai Title and his 22nd win along with his 15th win by KO/TKO. The loss was only the second of Grujic's career.

Clark controlled the first round which say far less action between the two. Grujic caught Clark with a pretty solid uppercut but Clark answered back with punches of his own as well as his powerful knees. In the clinch Clark was simply too strong for Grujic who simply could not escape. This was the proving fact in the end when Clark took hold of Grujic and just exploded his body with knees. Congratulations to Scott on his win and becoming the newest IKF Amateur World Champion!

As for the event? Well, when some talk about sellout crowds and standing room only, many question if it's true. However if you were in the house last night you would have no problem confirming the fact that this was a "Standing room only sellout!" It was estimated at between 800 and 1,000 which did not include the many who had to be turned away due to the venue capacity. This event ran flawless and each of the scheduled 9 bouts were exciting from bell to bell. Although the other 8 bouts were not sanctioned by the IKF, these other 18 fighters are more than deserving of attaining some press here.

Here are the nights full results in order:

  1. Calgary, Alberta, Canada's Nate Smandych took the first win of the night. He defeated Fawz Amin of Richmond, British, Columbia, Canada in a special grudge match by unanimous decision.
  2. Bryan Campbell of Calgary, Alberta, Canada defeated Alance Beau Corbbrey of Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA by unanimous decision.
  3. Rima Sidhu of New York, New York, USA defeated Misty Sutherland of Calgary, Alberta, Canada by split decision.
  4. 2004 IKF Amateur Muay Thai North American Champion Darren Snell of Calgary, Alberta, Canada won a "VERY" close split decision victory over Brandon Gay of Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA in a bout that could have easily been scored either way.
  5. If not for the hurricane that stranded him (And several others around the USA) that forced a cancellation of his flight from Detroit to Orlando for last years 2004 IKF North American Tournament in Orlando, Canada's Phil Leier might be another 2004 IKF NAC Champion from Canada. Needless to say Leier had his hands full tonight with Commerce Georgia USA's Brian Robertson. In rounds 1 and 2 you could have tossed a coin. In rounds 3 and 4 though, Robertson easily won (In our opinion anyway - we didn't see the scorecards) and looked to be on his way to a decisive victory. However Leier came out in round 5 like he was a fighter starting fresh in round 1. Leier took it to Robertson who by this time was slowing, and won the bout by what we are sure would have been a very close unanimous decision.
  6. 2004 IKF Amateur Muay Thai North American Champion Jason Cutbill of Calgary, Alberta, Canada chalked up another win by unanimous decision over Adrian Bachler of Switzerland.
  7. 2004 IKF Amateur Muay Thai North American Champion Jesse Miles of Calgary, Alberta, Canada landed a perfect right leg round kick on the side of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA's, Lucas McDevitt's head that cut his eye and took him down at :42 seconds of round 2 giving Miles his 11th win and 6th win by KO/TKO.
  8. Natalie Fuz of New York, New York, USA defeated Rayelene Kellock of Calgary, Alberta, Canada by split decision.
  9. Scott Clark of Calgary, Alberta, Canada defeated Nenad Grujic of Basel, Switzerland by Knockout at 1:42 of round 2 to capture the vacant IKF Amateur MuayThai Light Heavyweight World Title.

Congratulations to trainer Ajarn Mike Miles who's fighters filled the Canadian side of the card and won 7 of the 9 bouts. Also, a great job by Kru Simon Burgess who's two women fighters both took home victories. Overall this was a great night of kickboxing and Muay Thai action by all the fighters and a very professional job by the nights staff of officials.

Our hats go off to the great production of the Calgary Amateur Kickboxing & MuayThai Association (CAKMA). To CAKMA President Shelly Evans and her dynamic staff, we say "Thank You" for an exciting night of outstanding action!

Oh wait, we almost forgot. First of all it was great to see former 2 time IKF Champion Jason Jillian (Right, Among others of course) at the event. However, Jason made sure everyone remembered who he was on this night. At the return if the nights intermission Jason was introduced to the crowd and brought to the ring. When there, he called his girlfriend Kristi (So sorry if it's spelled differently -Cristie, e, ty, Kristy etc... but everyone should get the picture...) into the ring with him. Once there, you guessed it. Jason, as every true gentleman should, went to one knee and asked her to marry him... Which we're pretty sure she said "Yes" to but he forgot to put the mic to her for the answer. However, the answer seemed clear as he slid the ring on her finger. Congratulations you two!
Jason won his IKF Amateur Canadian Welterweight Title in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 14th, 1997 by unanimous decision over Dave Zuniga of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, 48-47, 48-47 49-46. He won his IKF Professional North American Super Welterweight title on April 7th, 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA when he defeated James Cook of San Francisco, California, USA by unanimous decision, 49-46, 48-47 and 50-46. Jason informed us he is now officially retired after a career that saw him build a record of 29 wins, 8 loses, 1 draw with 14 wins coming by way of KO/TKO.

MORE IKF NEWS OF 5-28-05

IKF Central East Regional
Looking To Break Records!

IKF Virginia, USA: As of May 27th at 7:30 PM the IKF Central East Regional is breaking the record set by last years IKF Central East Regional. IKF Regional Director Craig Smith and his promotional Team have just registered their 75th fighter which if it stands, would break last years record set in Virginia for an IKF Regional Event.

Adding to the success of this event is that this year the Regional will accept Amateur fighters in 3 IKF Rule styles instead of just the one (Full Contact) as was offered last year. This year the regional will accept fighters from Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware in Full Contact, International and Muay Thai rules.

With three weeks still left before fight time this mark should not only be broken, it should be shattered. "I have been contacted by three other teams whom have said they are promising at least 20 fighters." Said Smith. Although 75 fighters have registered, there are circumstances that could possibly change the outcome or number of fighters who actually show up to "Walk the Walk" on June 18th.

The only issue for Smith and his Team though are having received many Regional Registration forms that did not include the required registration fee as listed as a mandatory requirement for registration. Of course some say "The check is in the mail", still, without the required registration fees adds more paperwork for the organizers. If fees are not sent in or arrangements not made as required and stated clearly on the regional registration form - (Registration Forms "Without Fees" will be Disposed of) these fighters may not be participating. There are the possibilities of a Duty call from the Military, in the Virginia area which is not unheard of. There is also the injury factor, God forbid anyone getting hurt during training, but it does happen as we all know. This being said Smith and his associate promoters, Frank Cucci and Clark Walters, are still expecting a record turnout and more.

There is the possibility that this Regional will push the numbers to the Likes of The East Coast Classic, Currently the Largest Non National Championship event held in the Country. This would mean the East Coast Regional may surpass 100 registered or participating fighters.

EVENT OFFICIALS
This years referee for Full Contact will be Trey Wyatt out of North Carolina. With Trey's new surgery on his knees, this should be a different outcome for him as a judge. His movement around the ring will be much improved. IKF referee Fred Fitzgerald will be the Muay Thai and International Rules style referee along with many other IKF Judges such as Phil Maldonato out of New Jersey, Jack Dark and Willie Hunter Jr. out of Virginia Beach and Roger Dabney out of Richmond, Virginia. Martial arts legend Joe Lewis has even said he would lend a helping hand at this years IKF Central East Regional as a Judge. The Fight Doctors will be Dr. Green and Dr. Frodie, both are USA Boxing Doctors for the state of Virginia. The physicals will be done at weigh-ins.

LOCATION & TIMES
The event will be held at BlackHawk Martial Arts Center, (757-548-9550, 234 N. Battlefield Blvd in Chesapeake Virginia, 23320, on Saturday June 18th. The weigh-ins will be the night before starting at 5:PM until 10:PM at the same location. Late registers or weigh-ins need to be at the location by 8:AM that Saturday Morning. The fights will start Saturday morning, June 18th at 9:AM.

SPECTATOR INFO
There will be seating for only 350 which means both the daytime preliminary event and the night time finals event will more than likely be a sell out. Please contact one of these numbers for tickets (757) 491-1733, (757) 548-9550 or (757) 495-7070. If you are traveling from out of town and bringing spectators, please inform the event staff at weigh-ins as to how many spectators you are expecting and they will make arrangements to get them in the door. Tickets for the daytime event are $5.00 General and $10.00 Ringside. For the evening Finals, the General Admission will be $20.00 and Ringside $35.00.

Hotels info can be found at the IKF Central East Regional Page or by going to www.teamcopeland.com and click other info. Registration forms can be found by clicking HERE. or at www.teamcopeland.com or at www.craigsmithkarate.com - Please make checks or money orders to, Craig Smith and mail to, 1185 Broadlawn Road, Virginia Beach, VA, 23454 along with the mandatory "PRE-PAID" Regional registration fee of $35.00.

Mr. Smith (right) would like to add, "I want to thank my partners Clark Walters and Frank Cucci for all of their hard work so far getting this event ready. Most of all I would like to thank the people whom support me and my shows, I would not be able to do it with out you guys. Come Walk the Walk in Virginia with us all at this years IKF Central East Regional and prepare yourself for the 2005 IKF North American Classic to be held again this year in Orlando Florida, USA, August 19th, 20th & 21st."

2005 IKF
REGIONAL SEEDING
TOURNAMENTS

As of today there has only been 1 IKF Regional Seeding Tournament for the 2005 IKF North American Classic to be held again this year in Orlando Florida, USA. The dates for the event are August 19th, 20th & 21st. With the exception of the potential growth rate of the event we plan to have 70 Championship bouts at this years Championships.

As we have said in previous years, this event is not, and has never been promoted by just 1 individual. It's a complete TEAM EFFORT. Without regional directors/promoters hosting the various Regional Seeding Events, there would be no local links to many of you for this great event. Without their efforts, many of you might not have known about this tournament. So on behalf of us here at the IKF Headquarters we would like to acknowledge the great work of our Regional Directors. Without their great work, there wouldn't be an IKF Amateur Kickboxing Championship Tournament!

If your State was not listed in any of the Regionals above, you can register for the
2005 IKF
North American Classic

By Clicking
HERE

Many more individuals make this great tournament possible as well which include all the coaches and trainers who put in countless hours with their only return being the look on each of their fighters face after a much deserved victory. It is their efforts that bring the participants to the Championship Tournament Events to truly "Walk The Walk" and become a TRUE Amateur Kickboxing Champion.

Without trainers, there would be no fighters. Without fighters there would be no fights. Without officials, there would be no order and without the support of family friends and the fans of this great sport, none of us would be doing what we love today in this sport.

We cannot forget the great support of the sponsors who we hope to have involved with this event as well as other IKF Sanctioned Events around the world. Please support the sponsors of our IKF Championship Tournament as they have proven their desire to support our sport and "Walk The Walk" with us.

Glove Sizes
At This Years
IKF North American Classic

Last Wednesday, May 18th, we announced that all Amateur fighters at this years 2005 IKF North American Classic will be wearing 10 ounce gloves. This decision was made to lessen the confusion at the glove table during the tournament. However, what we failed to address was the issue of Safety. After discussing with a lot of you on the IKF Team about the Safety issue (Of the larger fighters wearing 10 ounce gloves in the Tournament) over the last few days, we have re-adjusted yet again.

We have made the decision to follow the Amateur requirements set forward by USA Boxing. These standards are that all fighters below 165 lbs. shall wear 10 ounce Gloves. All fighters 165.1 lbs. and above shall wear 12 ounce Gloves. We here at the IKF thank all of you for your input in regards to this issue.

See you at THE SHOW in Orlando!

YOUR THOUGHTS?

Pro Full Contact Rules
Foot Pads & Kick Counting

With the use of the Message Board we can attain the many opinions of others here. Thanks to Jason (fight geek), (His user name on the board) we have a good topic to discuss this week. Jason asked a question about Foot Pads in "PRO" Full Contact Rules. From his starting post, we have added a couple more questions to ponder in regards to his topic. In general, they all center around rule changes for Full Contact Style. Together, all these questions are as follows:

  1. Should Foot Pads be mandatory in Amateur Full Contact Rules Bouts?
  2. Should Foot Pads be mandatory in Pro Full Contact Rules Bouts?
  3. Should Kick Counting be mandatory in Amateur Full Contact Rules Bouts?
  4. Should Kick Counting be mandatory in Pro Full Contact Rules Bouts?

There you have them. Your topics for the week to address. To go right to this thread CLICK HERE!

May-Hem IV
ROCKS!

Greenville, South Carolina, USA

IKF South Carolina, USA: As if anyone would expect anything less, IKF Promoter Ray Thompson (Right) and his Upstate Karate & IronSpirit Promotions once again treated us all to yet another dynamic edition of "Martial Arts May-Hem!" This being MAMH number 4, Thompson and his TEAM of course surpassed all their previous performances and set yet another higher standard of IKF Kickboxing shows. Heck, for that matter, ANY Kickboxing show!

The venue was the beautiful Palmetto Expo Center in Greenville, South Carolina USA and the set-up was outstanding. Especially the 4+ foot elevated, 100' fighters ramp to the ring. What an entrance it provided for the 18 fighters who put on tonights show. And what a show it was! Lights, smoke machine and 'Rockin' music made this shows one that kept everyone on the edge of their seats and when not there, they were standing!

A couple of years ago he was one of our IKF TV Fight Footage Directors. However tonight, Tim Bachman was behind the microphone as he belted out his fabulous rendition of the National Anthem to begin the show and the excellence didn't stop there. As ring announcer Sky Drysdale kept saying throughout the night, "This is what IKF Kickboxing is all about!"
Here are the nights results below...

  1. IKF AMATEUR FCR
Keith Kloiber of Lawrenceville Georgia (1-0/0, 176, 5'9", 30, 11-30-74) and Phillip Freeman of Simpsonville South Carolina (0-1/0, 180, 6', 34, 5-29-70) had something in common few fighters have. The "SAME" Trainer, Ray Thompson. A few months back, Thompson's school held an 'In house' smoker to get students interested in the sport. On that night, Kloiber and Freeman put on an explosive display and when the smoke from the fireworks cleared, many were asking to see it again, but this time, as a real bout. So, Thompson granted their wish and the wish of many who saw the first meeting and hooked them up as the lead off fight of the night. This night started out to belong to Freeman who took round 1 10-7 on all 3 judges cards. It was looking to be a blow-out. However, Kloiber pulled off one of the greatest comebacks we have seen at the amateur level. First he forced a standing 8 on Freeman in the second round to win the round 10-8 on all 3 judges cards. Then he forced 2 standing 8's on him in round 3 to take the round 10-7 and the win on all 3 judges cards 27-25. Great action by both but what a comeback by Kloiber!
  2. IKF AMATEUR FCR
Becki "Bam Bam" Halloran of Simpsonville, South Carolina, USA (4-1/0, 142.5, 5'7", 33, 7-20-71, Ray Thompson) defeated Katie Davis of Fredricksburg, Virginia, USA (5-4/0, 149, 5'8", 21, 5-19-84, Travis Alexander) by unanimous decision 30-27. As in her previous bouts, Halloran was a non stop endurance machine that just never slowed up. Davis was tough, but Halloran never gave her a chance to keep up with her.
  3. IKF AMATEUR FCR
Lori "Lil Bit" Burney of Simpsonville, South Carolina, USA (4-2/1, 115, 5'4", 32, 8-12-72, Ray Thompson) gave Cara "The Terror" Dickerson of Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA (4-1-1/0, 112, 5'1" 28, 5-3-77, Craig Smith) her first defeat by majority decision, 28-28, 29-28 and 30-26. The draw score surprised us as we had Burney unanimous 29-28. Still, we would like to see Dickerson against someone her size and weight at 112 lbs. because the 3 lb. difference may not seem like a lot, but Burney showed all the power on this night being the much stronger fighter in the ring.
  4. IKF AMATEUR FCR
"Lightning" John Greubel of Atlanta, Georgia, USA (17-0-1/2, 152, 5'10", 23, 2-13-82. Zack Day/Mark Greubel) and Shawn Giles of Dalton, Georgia, USA (14-2/8, 152, 5'9", 32, 1-6-73, Ben Kiker) looked to be one of the best bouts of the night on paper. With only 1 loss among them both, on Giles side, and a total of 30 wins together, the crowd had high hopes for this one. Let it be known that these two did not let anyone down!!! This was an exciting bout that didn't need any kick counters as these two blasted away in a special 4 round non title bout. In the end Greubel pulled out the majority decision 38-38, 40-37 and 40-37.
  5. IKF AMATEUR FCR
Brendan "Cash Money" Carpenter of Simpsonville, South Carolina, USA (5-1/2, 211, 6', 38, 2-20-67, Ray Thompson) defeated Justin Steckler of Fredricksburg, Virginia, USA (5-5/0, 211, 5'11", 22, 2-19-83, Chris Manuel) by split decision 37-39, 39-37 and 39-37. This bout to us seemed to us to be all Carpenter as he was the stronger and more aggressive fighter on this night. Having a younger days amateur boxing record of something like 70-2 didn't hurt either as his boxing skills along with his powerful kicks made for a strong 'One-Two-Three' combination he worked all night long.
  6. IKF AMATEUR FCR
At last years 2004 IKF/TKO North American Championships in Orlando, Florida, USA Bobby Smith entered the tournament without any fight experience... Yes, an 0-0 record. Three fights later he was the new IKF FCR North American Lightweight Champion. In round 1 he defeated Jason Beck of Maultrie, Georgia, USA by unanimous decision 30-27 on all 3 judges cards. In his championship bout he fought and defeated Patrick Lynch of Waynasboro, Pennsylvania, USA by unanimous decision 30-27 on all 3 judges cards. Between Lynch and Beck though was a fight against someone many thought was going to be the 2004 NAC Champion, Dallas "Wild Thang" Crowe of Greer, South Carolina, USA (12-7/2, 129, 5'7", 20, 9-8-84, Kevin & Shannon Hudson). However, Smith took it to Crowe by unanimous decision, 30-26 on all 3 judges cards. Simply put, Crowe was looking for, and tonight, got his rematch. However, it was everything Crowe "Didn't" expect it to be. Smith was quicker, stronger and more powerful in all 5 of the scheduled rounds in this special 5 round non title bout. Although there was no title on the line, you might of thought there was with the excitement this fight made in the crowd. In the end Smith brought his name to the spotlight once again as he easily handled Crowe, especially in round 2 forcing 2 standing 8 counts, 50-42 on all 3 judges cards. Giving a fighter like Crowe two defeats like he has is no easy task! Crowe is no easy opponent for ANYONE! With this being said, and we think Crowe will even agree, listen here and now everyone, this Bobby Smith is going to be a BIG NAME in this fight game soon enough, if he isn't to some of you already. The training Ben Kiker is giving him should soon propel him to World Champion status... Mark our words! Keep in mind he has only had 6 fights, and listen to what we are already saying about him!
  7. IKF PRO FCR
Peyton "The Artist" Russell just moved from Minnesota to South Carolina. He said he wanted a change of scenery and change of life-style and the South Carolina countryside and the warmth and hospitality of these people down here just won his heart. So, the soft spoken Russell packed up his bags one day last fall and moved South. Some may say the rest is history, but lets not jump ahead of ourselves because Russell is actually in the middle of his history making future. Tonight Peyton entered the ring as a Professional fighter for his first time and entered as simply "Peyton The Artist!" It didn't take this artist long to paint a picture of kickboxing perfection all over Augusta, Georgia Jason Miller (2-2/2, 185, 5'10", 29, 6-5-75, Mike Carlson) body on his way to a TKO victory at 1:03 of round 4.
In Peyton's corner now stands trainer Ray Thompson who will guide him to his future of Pro Kickboxing after an outstanding amateur career of 36 wins and 6 loses, 9 wins by KO/TKO. Now the 35 year old 5'11", 178 lb Peyton is on a new mission. A mission to the top, and the way he looked tonight, move aside everyone, because there is only room for "ONE" Artist...
  8. IKF PRO FCR
When you see Raoul "Axeman" Doucet of Hawkesbury, Ontario, Canada (13-4-2/6, 228, 6'2", 38, 2-26-67, Johnny Mucciaronne) standing on the scale in a muscle flex you think he is unstoppable in a way former Super Heavyweight champion Dennis Alexio was. However, when you see Dan "Son of a Preacher Man" Erickson take the same pose, what stands out more is something like, "What's he weather like up there Dan?" Erickson of Duluth, Minnesota, USA towered over all of us at 6'6" tall, but appeared more like 10 feet tall. He doesn't think he hits hard but were sure after tonight, Doucet will gladly inform him he's wrong. After coming out and winning round 1 10-9, Erickson came out for round 2 like a freight train with no breaks. He dropped Doucet quickly in round 2 with a right. After taking a standing 8 count from referee Dan Stell, Doucet found himself in the headlights of that freight train once again. Soon after, Erickson let off an explosion of punches and kicks that sent Doucet to the ground again as Dan Stell called the bout as round 2 ended.
    So who is Erickson?
Well, we tried to tell you but few listened . . . And just for you, let us tell you about him here again. But this time, DON'T FORGET HIM!
Dan "Son of a Preacher Man" Erickson is from Duluth, Minnesota and is now trained by Bill Lassi. Dan's pro record "NOW" is 8 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw with 6 wins coming by KO/TKO. This was after having an excellent amateur career under the guidance of former IKF Pro FCR Super Heavyweight World Champion Mike LaBree. As an Amateur Dan won 21, lost 1 and won 11 of those 21 by KO/TKO. While an amateur Dan won back to back IKF National Amateur Tournament titles. At the 2001 IKF National Amateur Tournament Dan won both his Saturday prelim bouts and went on to win the FCR Heavyweight Title on Sunday with a victory over Wil Joseph of Dallas Texas by TKO at 1:18 of the 2nd round. At the 2002 IKF National Amateur Tournament Dan successfully defended his 2001 FCR Heavyweight Title when he defeated Mark Mortensen of Lake Zurich, Illinois by unanimous decision 29-26 on all 3 judges cards. Now as a professional, Dan and his trainer Lassi have just one single goal in mind... Becoming the IKF World Champion! However, it won't come easy. Standing in their way is the other train coming down the track who took Doucet out in round 1 to win the IKF World Title they want. 6'5", 224 Mark Selbee, and you all know what happens when two trains meet head on...! We can hardly wait for such an explosion!
  9. IKF PRO FCR
Most normal fighters would never take a fight against Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, get delt every strike in the book in a losing effort, "AND" later, ask for a rematch. However, Kadir Kadri of West Babylon, New York, USA (P: 10-6-1/5, 191, 6'1", 23, 12-12-81, Tom Ingardiola) is no normal fighter. As some would say,"He's a freak of nature!" Especially when it comes to tolerating pain. Still, being such does not always grant you the skill to outwit a fighter like Thompson... Which explains a lot about why he's called "The Wonderboy!"
Tonight Thompson, of Simpsonville, South Carolina, USA (P: 4-0/3, 187, 6', 22, 2-11-83, Ray Thompson) gave Kadri everything in the Wonderboy trick bag, and to the surprise of us all, Kadri stayed up. However, please don't take such a feat as the fight was close. Kadri showed us toughness we have never seen before, but what he didn't show us was his ability to score on the Wonderboy. In the end, this was all Wonderboy in every single round as he won his 4th professional fight in a row in as many outings by unanimous decision, 70-63 on all three judges cards. The only thing Kadri can now say is that he is the first professional fighter to take Thompson the distance... Which in reality, may mean little in the fight game...

Tonight we saw some outstanding amateur talent and we hope to see them all at this years 2005 IKF North American Classic in August in Orlando Florida battling it out again! As for the professional fights, what else can be said but WOW! Who doesn't like great Professional fights?!

Great job by everyone and especially Team Thompson! Sorry if we missed anyone, but it's a little late at night... Or that is... Morning. We look forward to the next card this fall. "The Standoff I"
By IKF Event representative Pete Peterson

IKF Joliet Illinois, USA: For the past 5 years, we have seen HCX fighters "Walk the Walk" all over the Midwest. Saturday, May 14th, not only did they "Walk the Walk" but HCX Mixed Martial Arts Trainers, Master Ron Hill, Master James Hill, and Sensei Brian Thompson made their promoter debut.

"Stand Off 1" took place at the Joliet Park District in Joliet, Illinois, marking the first time for a combative sporting event in Joliet. The nearly sold out crowd was treated to all 3 rule divisions; FCR, IR, and MTR, plus submission wrestling and an awesome San Shou demonstration by Masters Ron and James Hill. Wait… There's more. Not only is James Hill an incredible fighter, but his voice is incredible too as he opened the show with The National Anthem.

Due to an entire team pulling out and a couple of "No Shows", Tashi (Ron Hill) had to scramble to fill the card and with the help of Team Toro (Richardo Perez), he did just that and did a fantastic job. Stand Off 1 presented 5 IKF sanctioned kickboxing bouts and 4 submission matches. The results are as follows:

K-1 USA Press Release
From Scott Coker - K-1 USA

Dear fellow members of the martial arts community:
During the last several weeks, there has been a great deal of speculation and discussion concerning the possible involvement of the K-1 organization in a martial arts fighting event that is scheduled to take place at Calgary, Alberta, Canada's Max Bell Center on Saturday, June 4th. I am writing to resolve any confusion pertaining to this matter. Neither K-1 nor any member of its organization is involved, in any capacity, with the promotion of this event. The event is being promoted by Mr. Keith Crawford (Right) in conjunction with the "Heavyweight Gladiators" professional kickboxing series based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

On behalf of the entire K-1 organization, I would like to wish Mr. Crawford and his colleagues the best of luck with their event on June 4th. Mr. Crawford has been an exceptional promoter and contributor to the sport of martial arts fighting for quite some time and we hope he will continue to be so.
Sincerely,
Scott Coker

Rijker to Meet Martin In
"Million Dollar Lady"

LOS ANGELES, USA: Better late than never. That's what boxing observes are saying after it was announced that *Lucia Rijker will meet Christy Martin in a boxing match July 30th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. In what is being billed as the "Million Dollar Lady," each fighter will receive a guaranteed $250,000. The winner then will get an additional $750,000 bonus, making this the first $1 million payday in women's boxing history.

"It's a miracle but (promoter) Bob Arum deserves all the credit," Brian Young of Prize Fight Promotions was quoted as saying in an Internet report. "Bob did a spectacular job of putting the fight together. It's almost a miracle after all of these years that the fight can be made." Young explained that Top Rank will promote the bout with Prize Fight helping with event coordination. Reports indicate the contractual weight will be at 142 pounds "plus or minus a pound."

(*) Lucia Rijker now lives in Van Nuys, California, USA but comes from Amsterdam, Holland. She has been called the "World's most dangerous female fighter" on a pound-for-pound basis as well as "The Most Dangerous Woman in the World," along with other nicknames such as the "Queen of Lightning," "Lady Ali," and "The Dutch Destroyer." Born in Amsterdam on December 7, 1967, Rijker began training in judo at the age of six. Although some may not know it due to her popularity in Boxing, Rijker started out in kickboxing. She began kickboxing at age fifteen, studying in the gym of Johan Vos, one of the most respected training facilities in Holland and training primarily with male kickboxing, boxing and judo champions. She burst into prominence in the kickboxing world in her sixth match on January 15, 1984 ... disabling veteran American champion Lilly Rodriguez (sister of then world champion kickboxer Benny "The Jet" Urquidez) just 30 seconds into a scheduled five-round fight with powerful kicks to the legs.

Rijker gained an international reputation as a kickboxer, fighting in Europe and Japan. She defeated then-world title holder Cheryl Wheeler of the USA by decision in Amsterdam on October 6 1985 (and is considered responsible for helping to persuade Cheryl to retire, by breaking her nose in that fight!) She also defeated French champion Nancy Joseph in three rounds, Master Toddy's British star Ann Holmes in 30 seconds in Amsterdam on April 26, 1986, and the skilled French kickboxer Danielle Rocard in just 15 seconds in Arnhem on February 14, 1988.

Bonnie Canino lasted a full seven rounds against Lucia in a clinch-filled affair but lost the decision, while Valerie Henin was dispatched by her in four rounds in Amsterdam on November 8, 1987 (though not without a struggle). Lucia eventually amassed a 36-0 (25 KO) record as a kickboxer, and won four different world titles.

On March 21st, 1996 in Los Angeles, California, USA Rijker entered the world of professional boxing as she faced and defeated Melinda Robinson by Knockout in the first round. Rijker's last professional boxing bout was on May 2nd, 2004 against 2000 IKF/RINGSIDE USA National Amateur Champion Deborah "Sunshine" Fettkether at the Amsterdam Arena in Amsterdam, NH, Netherlands. Rijker won a 10 round unanimous decision and her 17th straight professional boxing win, 14 of them coming by KO or TKO.

In 2004 Rijker had the chance of working together with Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman in the movie Million Dollar Baby. The shooting for Lucia's part in the movie took only 2 weeks, and the end result was the one and only 'Billie the Blue Bear'. But Lucia didn't only act in Million Dollar Baby, she also trained Actress Hilary Swank (Who played Maggie Fitzgerald in the movie) in boxing. 2005 Martial Arts May-Hem
"A Night of Kickboxing"

IKF South Carolina, USA: May-Hem 05 is rapidly approaching, this weekend matter of fact. The fight card is top notch, the fighters and trainers are all on board and the crowd in Upstate South Carolina is nervous with excitement about this event. Ray Thompson and his IronSpirit Promotions Team have gone over board on this event. They have invested over $13,000 in TV promotions, over $3,000.00 in radio, more than $3,500.00 in print and that does not include the internet and in-house promotion they put together. If the show is not a MAJOR sell out then Ray and his team will have to go to fight promotions school or something because they have pulled out all the stops on this one and there isn't anything left in his bag of tricks to promote the show any better than they have.

As many here know we receive well over 100 e-mail a day from around the world. This does not include the usual spam and junk mail we receive. Within these 100 plus e-mails we often receive some from promoters around the world asking the this question, "Would it be possible for a fighter from another organization who is not ranked in the IKF Rankings to fight on an IKF event or for an IKF title?"

Some of these promoters have told us the stories about what other sanctioning bodies have told them to keep them away from the IKF, such as
"You can't fight for the IKF unless you are in their rankings."
Or...
"To fight for the IKF you need to join their rankings which is about $500.00."
That's funny... It's only $25 for a "Lifetime" membership and it has been this way since we started accepted open registration for the rankings about 8 years ago. To see our fighter registration forms, Click HERE.
HOWEVER, you DO NOT have to be in the IKF Rankings just to fight on an IKF Sanctioned event or to even get an IKF Title shot.

Despite what some other sanctioning bodies have been telling people with these questions, the answer is "YES, you can fight on an IKF Sanctioned event as well as for an IKF Title even if you are not in the IKF Rankings."

Why? How? Well lets be honest here everyone. Despite our work to rank as many fighters as possible, we all can agree that not every kickboxer in the world is in the IKF Rankings. So, when we have someone inquire about a title shot, of course, the first thing we do is look to the IKF Rankings. If we find a credible contender in the top of the rankings of the division the title is in, we do our best to book them for the shot. However, what has happened before is that no one in the top 3-5 and sometimes, even in the top 10, want to fight the fighter we put forward as challenging for the title. This forces us to seek out another contender, which in time we or even the Promoter will end up finding. This is because we want an IKF Title to be fought for by the "BEST" contenders possible in the region that the title includes.

So if you are a trainer somewhere around the world, and you have a fighter who has won a title(s) in other organizations, but is not in the IKF Rankings, let us know who you are. If you are a promoter who wants a certain fighter, who is not in the IKF Rankings, to fight for an IKF Title on your event, let us know about him/her. Send in a bio via e-mail or simply register him or her into the rankings by clicking HERE. By event time, those title contenders who may not have been the rankings will surly be in there by event time after we have been informed of them.

Such was the case when we started to look for a top contender to face IKF North American Amateur Light Heavyweight Muay Thai Champion Scott Clark (See article below) of Alberta, Canada. Clark was the number 1 ranked fighter in the Light Heavyweight division. However, his training partner Jesse Miles had just moved up in weight after winning the IKF North American Amateur title in the Middleweight division last year. Due to Miles record (9-1-1/5) and proven ability, he quickly became the number 2 ranked fighter in the Light Heavyweight division and the rankings looked as so:

  1. Scott Clark, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 21-3-1/14
  2. Jesse Miles, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 9-1-1/5
  3. Brandon Banda, Concord, California, USA, 7-0-1/1
  4. Terence Connor, New York, New York, USA, 3-0/1
  5. Spenser Buhler, Nampa, Idaho, USA, 3-1/3

Surly we would not match Clark up against Miles, so we started at the number 3 contender who was California Champion Brandon Banda of Concord, California, USA (7-0-1/1). Although Banda did not quite qualify for an Amateur World title shot, we still were required to follow procedures. However, we were informed by IKF Official Dan Stell that he was injured and would not be unable to take the bout. So, do we move to the number 4 contender? Well, if it were for a US Title, we may have allowed our number 4 or number 5 contenders to take the bout, however, Terence Connor of New York, New York, USA only had a fight record of 3-0/1 and Spenser Buhler of Nampa, Idaho, USA, had a fight record of 3-1/3, which did not qualify either of them for an Amateur World title. So, we took the search to Europe where Nenad Grujic of Basel, Switzerland, (13-1/6) was found with the assistance of those involved with the event.

What we are saying here is, in the end, we will do our best to make sure that the IKF Fight Fans will be able to witness
"The Best" Vs "The Best"
When it comes to ANY IKF Title Fight... Amateur or Professional
