Results From Ringside Promotions'
"FULL-CONTACT & LOW-KICK
KICKBOXING FIGHT NIGHT"

May 19th, 2012 - Thurles, Ireland

IKF Promoter Pat John Mc Cool took a big gamble on Saturday evening when he promoted a European Title fight in the Sarsfields GAA centre, Thurles. He was competing with not just the Champions League but also the Heineken Cup. The Thurles fight fans got behind him however and although he didn't sell out, he still managed to have a very respectable crowd of enthusiastic supporters who created an excellent athmosphere for their home fighters.

The main event was between tough Waterford fighter Dylan Moran, an experienced boxer and two time national kickboxing champion and French Superstar Eddie Nait who holds National, European and World Titles in both full contact and low kick kickboxing as well as a vast light contact record of well over 100 fights. This was going to be a case of the boxer versus the kickboxer and both men had a game plan. Morans' plan was to get inside and close to Nait and Nait to fight at range using his long reach and kicking skills. From the opening bell Moran went about his business and tore into his French opponent but Nait kept his cool and towards the end of the first round he caught the young Irishman with a perfect roundhouse kick flush on the side of the head which dropped him like a stone. Moran was down but not out and after the count he got back into the fray. The next four rounds were much the same with Moran certainly having his moments and landing some serious body shots but Nait showed his class and controlled the fight throughout and took a unanimous points verdict from all three ringside judges to capture the vacant IKF Amateur Full Contact Rules Light Welterweight Title.

Headlining the KOMBAT ZONE event was 3 great title fights. Kelly Copeland won the IKF British Lightweight title in dominant style. Steve Raybould won the IKF British junior title at featherweight whilst James Gridley stole the show in a defence of his IKF British Middleweight title. Gridley forced the referees to stop the bout in the 4th round after landing TWO jumping kicks in a space of 15 seconds, both kicks hitting the target clean. This was filmed by MAAction.com and hopefully footage will soon be available.

Benny "The Jet"
Kickboxing Certification and Training Camp!

Who is Benny "The Jet" Urquidez?

Although we know who this once Great Champion is, we were surprised how many did not... Shame on you Boys and Girls! If your going to excel in a sport, it's best to learn about it's history and those who got it to where it is today long before you were a fan or stepped into the fighting ring.

Benny "The Jet" Urquidez was one of the most explosive American kickboxers of all time! Today he is a martial arts choreographer, actor but most proudly today, a Teacher. Nicknamed The Jet, Urquidez was a non-contact karate competitor who later pioneered full-contact fighting in the U.S. He made the transition from point to full-contact karate in 1974 (The year of its inception in the USA) frequently fighting in bouts where the rules were ambiguous and contrasts in styles were dramatic.

After winning five World Championships in four separate weight divisions, Urquidez retired in 1989. However Urquidez came out of retirement in 1993 (at the age of 42) to seal his legendary status. He challenged and defeated the 25-year-old reigning world champion from Japan, victorious now in six world championships in five different weight divisions - a feat never seen before or since. Urquidez retired from professional competition, remaining undefeated for 27 years, the longest reigning World Champion ever. Black Belt magazine voted Urquidez "Competitor of the Year" in 1978.

Although records may vary from web site to web site, there is no question how dynamic of a fighter Urquidez was, making the questions about his actual fight record irrelevant. Wikapedia claims his record as 49-1-1 (win-loss-draw) with 35 knockouts. However others claim he went undefeated with a record of 62-0 (57 wins by knockouts.). Again, regardless of the complete record, NO ONE can argue "The Jets" Greatness as a true Champion and Lagend in our sport!

Now, you can learn from the legend yourself!
Don't pass up this great opportunity coming this June!

These two fighters both won their eliminator bouts for the right to fight for the title and it turned out to be an excellent contest with Mc Connell taking the laurels on this occasion. Marum was determined and hit the scales on the money at the weigh-ins but Mc Connell, who had to go and drop weight, seemed to have that little bit extra and landed some crisp shots on the Portlaoise man which caught the judges eyes.

Gary Manogue from Galway Black Dragon took on Welsh hard man Andrew Davies in a 4 round International bout. Although it went the distance with some good exchanges, Manogue took the win bringing his record to 17 and 0. Yvonne Mc Nevin from Galway took on Chloe Thomas from Wales on a weeks notice. Mc Nevin managed to get a well deserved draw. Junior fighter Troy Nolan from Galway defeated Waterfords Ryan Erkal in an entertaining contest in both young mens full contact debuts.

  1. IKF AMATEUR WOMEN'S
    FCR ATOMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE

Kelly Mainwaring, Swansea, Wales (IKF European Champion, 16-3-1, 49.9kg, 5'0", 10-08-82, Andy Morgan, 0044-7795271676)
    VS
    Monica Markowska, Jersey, UK ( WAKO World Champion, 12-2 13-2-1, 50.0kg, 5'2", 07-30-75, Dev Barrett, 0044-7931640488)
This much anticipated re-match was the highlight of this event in Wales. With the fighters having fought to a draw in March it was a credit to both teams that a rematch was made so quickly. It was clear that both girls had worked each other out in the first match with the first two rounds being almost impossible to score as they cancelled each other out. Mainwaring took the fight to Markowska but landed very little due to a good defence. Still you had to give those rounds to Mainwaring as the defence of Markowska was not enough to score. In the 3rd things exploded as Markowska stood and traded but still used her footwork well to catch the Welsh fighter off balance. This continued throughout the 4th and 5th rounds and although Mainwarings high work rate counted, it was not enough to secure victory. On the night the cleverer, more accurate Markowska did enough to win the IKF world title belt.
WINNER: Monika Markowska by unanimous decision 48-47, 48-47, 49-46.

Everyone who has ever promoted any kind of an event before or been associated with promoting events would agree that getting fans or spectators to a venue is the key to an events success. Every weekend around the world, people are presented with options as to how to spend their time, whether it be a weeknight or weekend, 10 minutes or days at a time, these individuals will end up making their decisions based up on their excitement or admiration of these events whether they be sporting events or anything else that sells an admission ticket. The point we are trying to make here is that for an event or a sport to be successful, there needs to be a loyal following of those who admire what the event(s) present to them.

As if selling tickets to a fight sport event isn't tough enough, this past Saturday night, it seems that every fight sport around the USA ended up suffering a little because of one simple issue... "Too much to choose from..."

With the well known "Party" holiday of Cinco De Mayo already pulling fight fans away from live events, add to it that last Saturday night also featured a top headlining Pro Boxing event (Mayweather vs. Cotto), a Free Fox Sports UFC MMA event ("UFC on Fox 3" - Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller) and already, the options for any loyal fight fan starts to become stressful.

This past Saturday night, AK Promotions went "Head to Head" with all three of these things. Adding to this, another fight event (Amateur MMA) was also taking place in the bay area. If you had to guess as to what the crowd would be at AK Promotions Amateur Muay Thai event as it went up against all these things, some would have felt safe in saying a few hundred at best. Well, the good news for AK Promotions was that the rival MMA event was the overall loser on the night as it drew maybe 150 to 200 spectators while the good news for AK was that it's crowd was closer to 1,000. The bad news was that AK was hoping for a crowd twice that size. However, don't let the empty seats fool you. As compared to previous AK Promotions events, this one ranked up there with one of their best.

Yes, there were some empty seats, which a lot were most likely empty due to the fact that local superstar John "BEG SEXY" Hurney's (L) title bout was over at the weigh-ins when his scheduled opponent Gary Grant "NO SHOWED!" A NO SHOW is without a doubt the most insulting, degrading and destructive thing a fighter can do to his or her opponent, the promoter as well as the many fight fans who wanted to see the fight. This event had other local Superstars on it, but AK Promotions had put a lot into the match-up of Hurney and Grant. Sadly now for Grant, he has been suspended Indefinitely and also now faces a Promoters Expense Reimbursement fine which could very possibly end his fighting career.

So now we have talked about the competition and some negative things that may have kept a potential larger crowd away... Enough of that, lets let everyone know what they missed now. If you were one of those fight fans that choose to not use your DVR and simply record the TV Events, you missed a Great Night of Muay Thai at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, California! AK Promotions had one of the most impressive venue set-ups it has ever had. In our opinion, if EVERY Amateur or Pro Kickboxing / Muay Thai promotion looked like the AK Promotions event did this past Saturday night, Kickboxing and Muay Thai WOULD BE ON TV! However, sadly, too many promoters are satisfied with a large room with all the lights on and the words Kickboxing and or Muay Thai on their poster in hopes of a sellout crowd. For years, Kickboxing and Muay Thai Promoters just don't get it. Success in the stand up sports of Kickboxing and Muay Thai is NOT just in Great Fights! If this were true, Kickboxing and Muay Thai would have EASILY been one of those televised events shown this past Saturday night and EVERY weekend right along with Pro boxing and the UFC!

However, what so many promoters forget to pay attention to is the "PRESENTATION" of their product. Presentation is more often than not, far more memorable than the production of the product. Don't get us wrong... We're not saying a beautiful venue with bad fights are more "Memorable" than a bad venue and Great Fights. The truth here is, NEITHER is a solution to success in our mighty Stand-up Sports of Kickboxing and Muay Thai! We as the kings of Stand-up fighting (Kickboxing and Muay Thai) have already been embraced by the public. Years ago, when Maurice Smith scored a Head Kick KO in an MMA event, MMA fight fans realized how much more exciting the Stand up fight game was as compared to a grappling or even a ground and pound fight on the floor of a cage is. Those of us in the Stand-up game have already been presented with opportunity... We just need to embrace it more seriously! As fight promoters, more need to take a vacation to California and watch what AK Promotions is doing. AK Promotions "AMATEUR" event are FAR MORE Prestigious than ANY of the Pro events we have seen in the last 5 years. We know this sounds insulting, but take it for what it REALLY is... It's SAD...

Fight Fans love Great Fights. We all know this. However, Fight Fans love a great presentation too! Short of the Great Fighters now with UFC, when they first started, UFC would be just another Cage Fight production without all their Production Quality. Look at UFC Today! It's an OUTSTANDING Presentation from the fights to the venue! It's a Prestigious SHOW! K-1 would have been just another kickboxing event, until they added in fire, lights and explosions. As promoters of the "Stand-up" fight sports, you can't succeed on just a great fight. You have to have a great presentation along with the Great Fight so EVERYONE remembers it! The Super Bowl is just another football game without the presentation. This is where AK Promotions has shined over the last couple years. Where some promoters just keep repeating their same ol presentation (And NEVER really Growing) AK Promotions has been getting better and better with not just their matchmaking, but their event presentation as well.

Here is a point to make to prove our point here...
If you, as a fight fan, truly think other Kickboxing and or Muay Thai Promotions are doing great events, WHY isn't our sport on TV? Here is the honest answer for all of you... The sports "PRESENTATION" is terribly inconsistent. We have spoken to "A LOT" of broadcast companies from Internet production to Free TV to Pay Preview and ALL of them tell us the same thing... "We can't trust the events we go to, to be Production Quality!" Some have great fights, but terrible venue, bad lighting, bad sound, inexperienced MC, sloppy DJ's, unsanctioned bouts attached with inexperienced officials and the list goes on and on. To sum it all up, the Stand-up Sports has failed itself.

Here is another issue we have heard from those in the TV World... "Too many promoters have decided to start their own 'Sanctioning Body' to avoid paying a sanctioning fee or paying quality officials, but that's not the real issue with these promoters... 'Most of their title fights are CRAP!" Yes, someone from a TOP TV Production company actually used that very phrase to us... They went on to explain how unlike in Pro boxing, fighters don't even have to be qualified to fight for a title. It's even worse in MMA where a "Sanctioned" Title is even seen less. "Promotional" titles are slowly killing every promotion under the UFC in MMA. In Kickboxing and or Muay Thai, it's getting to be the same way... Promoters are either creating their own sanctioning bodies so their fighter Bob can fight for a World title against Stan across the street. This concept is duplicated every weekend, state to state, country to country, so often, that even true fight fans don't even know what is a legit Title fight any more. As what happened with Traditional Martial Arts and the prestige of Black Belt, McDojos are popping up around the globe... "Give them a belt every 2 months and they will keep paying their monthly dues and you will be a rich karate school!" The same is happening with fight sports. Promoters creating their own McChampions, or money hungry sanctioning bodies selling Title Sanctioning for two fighters no one knows... And no one knows about them for one very important reason.... NO ONE out there has RANKINGS!

Without Rankings, HOW do these promoters and or sanctioning bodies determine which fighters are "Title Contenders?" Because of all these McChampions, our sports are being laughed at by the general public and admired less and less by the true Fight Fans! However, we have only ourselves to blame for the lack of our success. We have allowed promoters to create their own sanctioning bodies, or create their own champions... Just like in the Martial Arts, but instead of the top prize being a Black Belt, now it's a Title Belt! The true question is... "What is the value of the title?"

How long with the Stand-up sports of Kickboxing and Muay Thai continue to short change our fight fans? Putting fighters in a ring is only part of the work to make Kickboxing and Muay Thai a top Fight Sport. We all sat on our duffs and watched MMA not just pass us up, but SPRINT past us at the speed of light! MMA was new, and exciting to the fight fans, and the promoters followed in this excitement. PRESENTATION was Key for those who remained successful. We all watched it happen, right in front of our eyes. Our ISCF MMA Sanctioning body has been a major part in the success of MMA, so we were right there in the front seat. All of us saw what was making MMA a top sport, but no one cared to LEARN from the MMA excitement.

Our "Quote of the Day" was left up over the weekend for a very important reason. WE ALL needed to keep reading it. Even us here at the IKF! What was it?

"Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish"

A quote by Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs. Too many of us, even some of the top Pro Kickboxing and or Muay Thai promoters in the sport have become settled, content in their promotional efforts. None of us are truly trying and succeeding to be BETTER! To Stay HUNGRY and keep hunting for that better event, better production, better opportunity of the sport. As an exciting sport, we have become complacent... The WORSE thing ANY of us could be. We have stopped Hunting for that BETTER production, for that Better event, more legit title fights... Why?

Back to the beginning of our article here...
ALL of us have stopped being Hungry and become complacent... except for AK Promotions! As AK Promotions Sanctioning partner, we have created more LEGIT and Ranked Champions than any other promotion! A FACT that we are proud of. However, it's not enough. While AK Promotions has been working hard at getting better and better FOR YOU and For The SPORT, others have been keeping those who are holding our sport back, in business... We are not saying "Only support an AK Promotions event." However, we are about ready to say just that if other promotions don't start stepping up and try and improve the value of their PRODUCTION! AK Promotions has created an outstanding stage for the Amateur Kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters. They have a goal to start promoting PRO Kickboxing and Muay Thai as well... However, if they are not supported, they too, like others, may stop being hungry and become complacent... Or worse yet, we may lose one of the Great Promoters of our sport, simply because people don't see the need to help support them... Is this what you Fight Fans really want? To allow one of the few Promoters who is giving his all to give you a DYNAMIC - Pro Style Venue Arena to fight in, to get discouraged, complacent and come to the conclusion, "Is this all there is?"

AK Promotions' Johnny Davis and us here at the IKF have been trying our best to not face such words as the reality of Kickboxing and Muay Thai... "Is this all there is?" However, without the support of true Fight Fans, Trainers, Fighters and more so, TRUE Promoters, this may very well be what we all will soon face... "Is this all there is..." AK Promotions can't do it alone around the world. For this very reason, the IKF needs more promoters like Johnny Davis and his AK Promotions crew that are Hungry and want to be more than just a building with a ring and some chairs and a few fights. WE ALL NEED MORE to propel our sport to another level.

The IKF is the ONLY sanctioning body in the world today that keeps both Pro and Amateur Rankings in all the fighting rule styles. Yes, THE ONLY ONE! That's not being arrogant, or just us bragging, it's a fact. Now before you blow this off, ask yourself, as a fight fan, promoter, trainer, FIGHTER... How Serious are YOU in this? If you're not serious, and all you care about is a belt, we can tell you where to just buy one and save fighting some unranked opponent to be able to wear one. Heck, this is what happened to traditional Martial Arts! Earning a Black Belt was too hard for too many, so some business exec. from a company called EFC stepped in and "Changed Martial Arts Forever!" In most schools, Black Belts are now as easy as heck to get, and sadly, the general public believes these Black Belts are as good as those earned 30 years ago... Well, we all know they most are far from it! Are the fight sports now the next McFranchise? Are "CHAMPIONS" becoming a dime a dozen? Do you really need us to answer that for you?

If your a Champion, ask yourself, "How prestigious is the title you hold, or your team-mate"
Where can we all read about your title? When you retire, where can you still prove you held a title? The only Champions you can find this kind of information on are IKF Champions. Most other sanctioning bodies have outright told us, "It's too much work keeping track of all the different Champions." Gee, it wasn't too much work to go to the bank and cash your sanctioning check though... was it...

AK Promotions could save a bundle on every event by either going with another sanctioning body or by just creating their own Champions... So why don't they? AK Promotions believes, as the IKF does, that Quality does not come easy. Just writing a check to a sanctioning body or to a belt company for a belt is not the road to Quality. It's not the road to making our sport Legit either. EVERY contender on every AK Promotions event, as well as other IKF Sanctioned events, must Qualify for their title shot. It could be much easier, and less expensive for Johnny Davis, but he doesn't just do it for AK Promotions... He does it for the fighters fighting on his events! He only wants a CREDIBLE and or LEGIT Champion associated with his events. Not just a convenient or local fighter who is inexpensive to bring in. But ultimately, AK Promotions does all this FOR THE SPORT!

Ok, by now, most of you are probably thinking... "Why so angry? Is the IKF upset?"
Well, to answer honestly, YES WE ARE!
We are upset and afraid for what could happen to our Great Sport if no one stands up NOW to say something!
We are upset because no one has been the "SENSEI" per say, in our sport and kept us all in line! There is no discipline in our sport anymore.
We as Martial Artist have become less disciplined and many in our sport have lost integrity and exchanged it for the mighty Dollar!

Kickboxing and Muay Thai was moving forward STRONG in 2004 and 2005, and we were all just steps from the most successful time of the sport. Then, a few let their egos get in the way, their pocketbooks and we all broke apart. Everyone wanted their own Sanctioning bodies, their own tournaments, their own Champions... We all lost sight of the big picture and we all paid the price...

Within a year, MMA EXPLODED onto the scene as no other fight sport had. During this time, our ISCF MMA division Exploded as well. The IKF was still busy, but promoters we had built into icons of the sport decided they were so big, they didn't need IKF, as they believed they were bigger than everyone. There was no more TEAM in our sport. Kickboxing and Muay Thai was breaking apart and as the Stand-up Sports were fighting for position, MMA surpassed us without even a challenge... ALL of us allowed this to happen.... However, the question now is, how many of us can come back together and work to build this sport again?

AK Promotions has been committed, as have some other promotions. However, we all need to work hard like AK Promotions has. We ALL as a whole need to bring our sport to a different level. We ALL need true, legit competition to make us better... WE ALL NEED DISCIPLINE!

Those of you who are weak in your efforts, you will be offended by this article... However, those of you who are True Champions inside, TRUE Promoters inside, YOU will all realize that we all need to "Step UP!" If we stay where we are today, we will never get where we all want to be... The only question now is, WHO will really Step up?!

This past weekends AK Promotions event STEPPED UP! AK Promotions wanted to give multi time junior Champion Katrina Nahe a TRUE Challenge for a TRUE World title. So, AK brought in a fighter that the IKF determined was the BEST Challenge for Nahe... Tisha Balentien who came in all the way from Almere, Holland. Balentien was no beginner. With a fight record of 34-5-1/11, she was ready to challenge Nahe for the vacant IKF Junior Girls Amateur Modified Muay Thai Bantamweight World Title... note... This was a "JUNIOR" Title!

There was loads of hype prior to this bout and by the time these two took center stage, all that hype and smack talkin proved legit as both brought their A GAME to those Fight Fans in attendance. Although Nahe had far less experience record wise, her background in IKF Point Kickboxing proved helpful in her timing as well as targeting. While Nahe was scoring in the outside game, Balentien was racking up points while in the clinch with her knees. The two came out explosive in every round and each focused on their strong points. Balentien continued to win the inside knee battle, but it was Nahe who was winning the outside fight. By the time the fight ended, many thought it could go either way. Us at Ringside thought there would only be a point difference between the two. However, when the judges cards were tallied, only one judge saw it close like us. Judge Marshall Walker had it 48-47 while judges Ray Belowitz and Susan Thomas-Gitlin both had it 49-46. The winner, by unanimous decision was Katrina Nahe.

Prior to the Tisha Balentien - Katrina Nahe Title bout, Alec Gonzales of California (7-1) and Travis Clay of Arizona (5-2) met up for the vacant IKF Amateur "Full" Muay Thai Rules Western United States Lightweight Title. This was by far one of the most exciting bouts of the night. Gonzales and Clay went hard and fast for all 5 rounds and the scores alone do not express how close these two were. in the end, Judge Martin Sammon and Susan Thomas-Gitlin had it 49-46 while Judge Marshall Walker had it 48-47, all 3 for the new Champion Alec Gonzales by unanimous decision.

The nights main event was a Title Defense. T.J. Arcangle of San Francisco, California (12-1) has won several IKF titles. He had won the IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Light Welterweight World Title on October 8th, 2011 on another AK Promotions event in this very same venue in Oakland, California, USA. In the bout, he faced top contender John Hamm of Calgary, Alberta, Canada (22-12/9). After 5 rounds of some of the best fighting techniques we had ever seen Arcangle produce he defeated Hamm by unanimous decision, 50-44, 49-45 and 49-45.

For his defense, he would need to take on another top contender, Nicholas Chasteen of Tempe Arizona (16-3/6) Well before the bell rang, Arcangle knew he had his work cut out for him as his 141 pound contender also had a good 3 inches of height to his advantage. Chasteen stepped up to the scales at 6'1" to Arcangle's 5'8". Seeing this we wondered how Arcangle's game plan would battle the taller Chasteen.

From the opening bell, we must say that it often appeared as though Chasteen was the aggressor. Although lean and tall, it was clear that his slender physic was packed with plenty of explosive muscle. However, it also seemed that although Chasteen was agressive, Arcangle was blocking most of his shots and getting off some effective counters. Throughout all 5 rounds, Arcangle never appeared to be the aggressor. He simply remained patient and waited for Chasteen to attack. Chasteen seemed to always be the one to engage, but once he did, Arcangle would slip, move and counter. It was a well planned strategy against the taller Chasteen that seemed to be working. In the end, two of the three judges agrees as Judge Susan Thomas-Gitlin and Marshall Walker scored it 49-46 Arcangle and Judge Ray Belowitz scored it 48-47 Chasteen. Arcangle keeps his title on this night, but like the Balentien - Nahe title bout, we wouldn't mind seeing these two go toe to toe again.

Here is the nights full round-up and bout stats.

MORE IKF WORLD CLASSIC NEWS...

SOME GREAT NEWS
FOR THIS YEARS FIGHTERS!

NO MORE ADULT MEN OR WOMEN
WEIGHT GAPS
At This Years
2012 IKF World Classic
CHAMPIONSHIPS

MORE JUNIOR DIVISIONS AS WELL!

As some may remember from last years IKF World Classic we were forced to create weight gaps between some of the weight classes to assure the weight spreads between weightclasses met Florida State requirements. Well, this year we decided to eliminate the weight gaps and simply ADD more weight classes. We added in 5 More Adult Men weight Divisions. We added in 4 More Adult Women weight Divisions and the best news for the Juniors out there is that we added in 10, yes, TEN More Junior Weight Divisions.

This will help a lot of people decide easier what weightclass they can register in to. Keep in mind though that as in every previous year of the IKF Tournament if a bracket does not have at least two fighters in it you will see notes by certain fighters names asking them to confirm or deny certain bracket moves. In some cases fighters may be asked to do what is called a "CATCH WEIGHT" division. For example, lets say we have 2 fighters in the Light Welterweight division (137.1 lbs. - 142 lbs.) and 2 fighters in a Welterweight division (142.1 lbs. - 147 lbs.). Well, as most know by now, it takes a minimum of 4 fighters to make a legit "Tournament" bracket (Legit Tournament bracket meaning each fighter has at least 2 fights to win the title). For this reason, we would be asking all 4 fighters to meet at a determined weight division between the two weight classes such as between 140lbs and 145lbs. Fighters will also be asked other options such as moving to a different weight division or different rule style.

Dates To Note About
THE FIRST DEADLINE DATE

Of The 2012
IKF World Classic

  1. WHAT HAPPENS AT FIRST DEADLINE OF JUNE 8th, 2012?
    • A LOT!
      • Today, May 2nd, we are 37 days away from the FIRST DEADLINE of JUNE 8th, for this years 2012 IKF World Classic Tournament.
      • The only BRACKETS or WEIGHT DIVISIONS that remain open and available to join by end of day of the first deadline day of JUNE 8th will be those with a minimum of 1 fighter registered in them. So if you are waiting for a bracket to fill, you could very well miss out on fighting in your preferred weightclass and rule style if you don't register prior to the First Registration Deadline of JUNE 8th!

      • At the end of the first deadline, "SEEDING" no longer matters for fighters who may have fought in a "Regional Seeding Tournament" as well as last years Champions (Who automatically attain a number 1 seeding if they register in before the first deadline and in the same division as they won last year).
        • After the first deadline of JUNE 8th, seeding is confirmed by the date your registration is received.
        • After the first deadline date of JUNE 8th, 2011 Champions (As in the same weightclass & Rule Division as 2011) will no longer be automatically seeded number 1.
        • After the first deadline date of JUNE 8th, having registered for a Regional Seeding event will not give you a higher seeding.
        • Prior to the first deadline of JUNE 8th, if you are not a returning 2011 Champion and you do not attend a Regional, you will be seeded according to WHEN your registration was received here at the IKF Offices - 2011 Champions and 2012 Regional participants will be seeded above you up until the first deadline date of JUNE 8th.
        • After the first deadline of JUNE 8th, ALL FIGHTERS will be seeded according to WHEN your registration is RECEIVED here at the IKF Offices, NOT POSTMARKED.

    • LAST YEARS NOTES
      • Last year, 30 days prior to the first deadline we had 11 registered fighters.
      • Today (May 2nd, 2012) we are 37 days prior to the first deadline and we have 15 Registered Fighters.

NOVICE DIVISIONS?
Say it Aint So!

Well, after being asked every year for the last 4 years to add a NOVICE division (FIGHTERS WITH *3 FIGHTS OR LESS ) to the IKF World Classic Championships we finally did so. However, the responses we have been getting from this decision are actually more negative than positive so the jury is still out as to if we will have a Novice division in the future.

Many have noted to us that this has been a "Cry for numbers" move as other tournaments have done around the World. They have noted where other tournaments do this, the actual tournament itself loses it's legitimacy of determining true Champions of the weightclasses and rule styles they represent. In doing so, the loss of credibility make the tournament title worth much less. When this has been added, the actual "OPEN" division shrinks considerably and the vast majority of the tournaments title contenders are simply beginners (Or those claiming to be beginners as there is no true way of checking a fighters fight record) that will now win the very same Tournament Title Belt as the "OPEN" Tournament Champions do. In doing so, although the event will pack more registration dollars, it's credibility ends up sinking to the bottom of the Tournament credibility scale... Or at least with the "Experienced" fighters and trainers it does.

The IKF Tournament system was the first ever Amateur Kickboxing and Muay Thai Tournament in the United States. For the last 13 years, the IKF has worked to make each year better than the last with more and better awards, more fighter gifts, better venue for the contending fighters to fight in and on and on. Every year the IKF has accomplished this. Every year the IKF World Classic has been better than the year before.

Sure, the IKF could just pick an inexpensive hotel maybe even charge less and give less and most likely, make a lot more money. However, the IKF Tournament has never been about making money. The IKF is not a promoter. The IKF created the IKF Tournament system so that every fighter from first the USA, then North America and now worldwide can come and have the opportunity to win a WORLD Tournament Title against other fighters looking to do the same. To TRULY be "The Best of the Best!" No fighter has ever been turned away from the IKF tournament.

The true question now is,

"Will a Novice Division be a welcome addition to the IKF World Classic?"

To make sure the Novice Division is separated from the OPEN Division, Novice Division fighters will fight for large Trophy cups, as did the Novice Division at last years IKF West Coast Classic Tournament. (See photos L & R). Although it's not a belt, these are not cheap or light Trophy Cups either. They weigh as much if not more than the awarded Title Belts.

One of the e-mails we received summed it all up and it went as so...
"According to the IKF West Coast Classic Tournament results page, you (IKF) had 39 Championship Divisions. Of them, 11 were Novice Divisions or roughly 28% of the total number of fighters. Of those Novice Divisions, all were adult divisions. Three were adult Novice women's divisions and 8 were adult men's Novice divisions. Within those Novice divisions, of the 120 or 130 fighters that fought (185 had Registered) at the IKF West Coast Classic Tournament, only 24 were Novice Division Fighters or roughly 18%."

He finished with,
"What I'm trying to say is, when your novice numbers exceed your open division numbers, it's a clear indicator that the true open class fighters are not taking your tournament seriously or as a legit or credible championship tournament. Although a novice division is a great place for real beginners to start, how can you be sure they are true beginners? I know for a fact of some fighters that attend events as novice fighters and they are far from novice, but no one knows because you can't be sure. A lot of them attend if they can still win the same belt the open champions do, thus making them appear to their friends as good as an open champion, which is why a true open fighter will be looking for the tournaments without or with very few novice division fighters. The worse thing that can happen though is if your novice numbers get up to like 40, 50 or even 60 percent of the total number of fighters fighting. When this happens, your tournament becomes no more prestigious that your weekly karate tournament. I hope this doesn't happen to the IKF Tournament."

Regardless of what we have been reading from others, we hope the IKF World Classic Novice division will add another option for the beginning fighters wanting to attend this years Tournament. If the novice division numbers are low, maybe it's a good thing. Maybe the e-mailer above has a point. That he and others want to keep the the IKF World Classic as "The most prestigious, all Amateur, Kickboxing and Muay Thai Tournament in the World!" As for us here, we would be proud to just be included as one of them...

April 28th, 2012 - Bridgwater, England

  • IKF/ISCF Event Referees: Nathan Ward

  1. ISCF Amateur MMA Southern Area Lightweight Title
    Rikki Gullis (Trowbridge, England, 3-2, 67.5kg, 5'10", 2-28-85, Stu Pike, 0044 7859922035 )
    VS Andy Stone (Plymouth, England, 5-0, 66.2kg, 5.9", 8-20-87, Darren Norris, 00447717791314)
WINNER: Andy Stone by Rear Naked Choke Submission 0:43 round 2.
This was a very evenly matched contest with both men having similar builds and stats. Some early trading gave way to a wrestling battle that saw submission attempts and escapes at a high rate. The pace was fast and furious and it was only a matter of time before one of these guys made a mistake. With one judge going even and one each way at the end of the first there was everything to play for in the 2nd. But Gullis made a quick mistake and Stone never let him off the hook. An explosive victory and first ISCF belt for Andy Stone.

  2. IKF Amateur FCR British Super Welterweight Title
    Rob Ellick (Bridgwater, England, 8-4, 69kg, 5'8", 4-13-86, Arthur Meek, 00447765042414)
    VS Mike Sandford (Cardiff, Wales, 7-1, 69kg, 5'9", 8-2-91, Lee Carter, 00447515939953)
WINNER: Mike Sandford by unanimous decision 50-47, 48-47, 50-48.
Having held the Southern Area title and with the English champion unavailable, Rob Ellick stepped up to face the Welsh wizard Mike Sandford. With the title having been vacated by Ryan Edmundson, Sanford jumped at the chance to cross the water from Wales to challenge for it. And he did not disappoint. His movement at times confused Ellick who just wanted to close him down. But it was not to be. A classy performance and no doubt about the decision and new champion Mike Sandford.

  3. IKF Pro FCR Southern Area Light Heavyweight Title
    Chris James (Bridgwater, England, 10-9-1, 78.9kg, 6'2", 7-29-86, Arthur Meek, 00447765042414)
    VS Matt Martin (Weston, England, 6-5-2, 80.2kg, 6'2", 8-2-91, Stuart Davies, 00447976528497)
WINNER: Chris James by unanimous decision 59-55, 59-56, 60-54.
These two campaigners have both fought and won at the higher level in the careers but this one was about re-building following tough losses. Neither man has ever been stopped and tonight was always going to be a distance affair. James was stepping up a weight division and Martin down one in this all west country clash. From the start Martin was playing catch up as James used quicker footwork and sharper punching to rack up the points. There were moments when Matt Martin looked to be in trouble but his big heart always pulled him back into the fight. But at the end it wasn't close, with judge Malcolm Martin (no relation) scoring a shut out and the others not far behind. A good win for Chris James who is back on track

  4. ISCF Pro MMA International Bout
    Kyle Bishop (Barnstaple, England, 4-1, 65.3kg, 5'7", 4-19-87, Lee Bishop, 01271321739)
    VS Ismael Padavia (Talance, France, 5-3, 66.0kg, 5'9", 7-13-81, Jason Ponet, 0033683613154)
WINNER: Ismael Padavia by RSF 3:35 round 2.
Kyle Bishop receives 30 day medical suspension until 28th May 2012

  5. IKF Amateur FCR: Light Middleweight
    Connor Bannister (Taunton, England, 1-0, 70.3kg, 5'10", 11-14-95, Mark Monk, 0044773458934)
    VS Dylan Nation (Taunton, England, 0-1, 69.8kg, 5'8", 10-10-96, Grant Harris, 00447554519687)
WINNER: Connor Bannister by unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

  6. IKF Amateur FCR: Super Lightweight
    Lewis Jordan (Bridgwater, England, 5-8-1, 63.6kg, 5.8", 07-28-92, Arthur Meek, 00447765042414 )
    VS Grant Mallinson ( Chippenham, England, 11-1, 66.0kg, 6'1", 12-04-95, Carl Mallinson, 01249 464354)
WINNER: Grant Mallinson by unanimous decision 29-28, 29-28, 30-27

  7. IKF Amateur FCR: Cruiserweight
    Michail Pankin (Bridgwater England, 0-1, 84.3kg, 5'7", 12-12-84, Arthur Meek, 00447765042414 )
    VS Adam Cooper (Taunton, England, 1-0, 81.8kg, 6'2", 10-23,84, Mark Monk 00447773458934)
WINNER: Adam Cooper by unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, 20-27.

  8. IKF Amateur FCR: Welterweight
    Juris Poskuus (Bridgwater, England, 2-2, 66.0kg, 5.9", 10-07-86, Arthur Meek 00447765042414 )
    VS Dean Bradley (Neath Wales, 2-0, 66.7kg, 5'6", 02-06-89, James Wallis, 00447837630084)
WINNER: Dean Bradley by majority decision 28-28, 29-28, 30-28.

  9. ISCF Amateur MMA: Heavyweight
    Tom Playll ( Bridgwater, England, 2-1, 115.3kg, 6'4", 12-23-89, Arthur Meek, 00447765042414 )
    VS Niall Howard (Melksham, England, 1-0, 121.0kg, 6'4", 08-13-89, Stu Pike, 00447859922035 )
WINNER: Niall Howard by TKO 1:53 round 3.
Tom Playll receives 30 day medical suspension until 28th May 2012

  10. IKF Amateur FCR: Light Heavyweight
    Luke Hardwell (Bridgwater, England, 0-1, 57.5kg, 5'4", 12-12-95, Martin Lawson, 00447584191057)
    VS Mitch May (Corsham, England, 1-0, 55.8kg, 5'3", 04-25-90, Stu Pike, 00447859922035)
